A Little About the Process

I loved this face sketch from our most recent tutorial that I decided to continue it by adding the rest of the body and finish it as a full illustration.

While I loved the character face and pose, you'll see that I struggled a bit with the background to start out. I knew that this piece would depict a lower or darker part in Mist's story, but I wasn't exactly sure where to place her for that part. I started out thinking maybe it could be in a stone room of a tower, but I kept coming back to the magenta color to stand out against her.

So I started playing with how to add those magenta accents in the dripping color from the edges of the canvas and then the flowers. What was cool about this was that it helped my mind flesh out a bit more of her story that I hadn't considered before! I absolutely love it when I work on an illustration and new information about the character and their story comes to me while I work. IT's almost like I'm the one discovering the story, rather than the one creating it.
