Hel, daughter of Loki and the giantess, Angrboda, was banished to rule over the cold planes of the dead by Odin. So in the land of Helheim she waits, accompanied by her sole living companion, Garmr, the wolf dog who protects the gates of Hel.
Ahhhh Hel. 🖤💀My goth queen of the icy underworld appears again! I have a few goddesses that I always have to return to because I love them so much and Hel is one of them! I'm a sucker for a good ol' corruption arc, and I feel like Hel fits the bill.
In the mythology, she doesn't start out threatening. Sure, the silly little detail of her being a half corpse might be a little off-putting. But she wasn't a threat. Even so, after she and her siblings were discovered by the Asgardians, they bound her brothers and Odin sent her to rule Hel, the land of the dead, in Nifleheim. She is banished to an icy realm far away from her mother, siblings, and any living thing!
So, eventually, when Baldr is murdered and falls under her jurisdiction, she is not willing to just "give him back," when the Asgardians ask. After that, when the battle of Ragnarok begins, she joins her father, Loki's, side with the armies of the dead. The cruel and brash treatment of her and her family by the Asgardians turned someone who was, yes, odd, but gentle and not a threat, into a vengeful force to be reckoned with.
It is such a tragic myth, but it speaks to me every time I revisit it.
I hope you like this new piece of her and Garmr!
