Here is the time-lapse speedpaint for Patrons🖌️ with music for: Hel and Garmr
Have you ever had it happen where you get an idea, sketch it out, and even from the beginning, you have a gut feeling that it is going to be a great piece of art? The idea just resonates and that excitement carries you into a flow. It doesn't always happen for me, but when it does, the feeling is so satisfying!! That's what happened with this piece.
I could just tell from the piece's bones that it would be solid. And because of that really solid foundation, I didn't feel like I needed to noodle around too much throughout the process. If only every piece felt like that, right? haha!
But why did this piece feel so great from the beginning? If I can analyze that, maybe I'll be able to start replicating this flow more often! Here is a breakdown of what I think happened:
Since this piece is based on Mythology, especially a goddess who's story really resonates with me, I already had that emotion to help carry me through the piece and give me an idea of her character and mood.
We don't always need a pre-existing story to replicate this, but we can try take a few minutes before starting or during the sketch phase to establish a general story idea and emotion even to original characters as we start sketching that will help carry us through the piece.
Everything about this piece leaned into my strengths as an artist, I think. The darker vibes, the character, the flowy hair and fur, the front facing composition, the lineart and hatching, and the very textured painting style and colors. I didn't feel like I was trying to force myself to do anything that I really dislike in this piece, so I was able to just focus on enjoying the process, and conveying the character and mood.
Even though the sketch was rough as usual, there wasn't anything I was very confused about or needed to really work at figuring out once the sketch was complete. Sure, I had a lot to clean up, but I wasn't trying to establish anything really new in the lineart phase.
In the process video, you may see my hands pop onto the screen and I roughly draw over them. I have learned over the years to do this whenever I need to: snap a quick reference photo for something like an arm or a hand, and then just draw over it and adjust it as needed. Even the skeleton hand used my own hand as a base for the pose, and then I had to look up skeleton hand anatomy to draw the bones. Doing this really saves me time and helps me get more accurate anatomy details.
I don't know about you, but I have been really struggling lately with nervously checking things like the news many times throughout the day, or listening to news podcasts. So many crazy things happen every day. But I have definitely noticed it negatively impacting my ability to focus on art. So for at least part of this process, I tried to make a rule that I could only listen to music or a fantasy audiobook. There is a lot of very concerning things happening in the world, but it is okay to take time to come back to yourself and focus on things like your work and your art.
I'm sure there are some other factors that must have played into why this piece flowed so well, but we'll stick to 5 for now.
