One aspect that I absolutely love about the sculpture this piece is based on is all of the sculpted foliage and florals. The overgrowth gives a wonderful sense of the long time that she has been still and sleeping on the throne. I wanted to make sure to include the foliage, but OH BOY, do I find drawing leaves and florals tedious. I LOVE the look of florals, but have very little patience for drawing all of their details.
So I decided to try for a more loose and messy approach. I think it worked okay. I might want to try playing with more abstract and messy foliage shapes to figure out a technique that lets me paint these kinds of lush scenes without driving me to madness. haha!
