A little about the process:
This piece was done as a commission for the newest Paperback edition of The Wraith King. And what a fun piece. In this scene, the characters are nude because they are about to dive under the water and don't want to get their clothes wet and cold, BUT it isn't actually a spicy scene. It is a scene where they have to trust each other, though, and I really feel like that trust came across in the drawing!
I sent two sketches to the author, which you'll see in the video. She decided on the first sketch. This tends to happen a lot to me. Someho,w the first sketch is often the best. Maybe it's because the whole concept is fresh for me, and it flows more easily, and so it just comes out better, or at least more appealing. Anyhoo, I do still like the other sketch/pose, so maybe I'll need to try repurposing it for something else.
Another fun thing about this piece was diving more into how to draw buff guy muscles. It's all fine and well for me to use my own photos as a reference for female characters, or even more average build males, but for these dudes with rippling muscles, it doesn't quite cut it! So I did have to spend a fair bit of time gathering references of muscly man chests, and arms! haha
What I have learned is that I need to familiarize myself more with the actual muscle structures so that I know what muscles go where, and then I can emphasize them more in muscular characters.
For the background, I felt that it all flowed quite well. A lot of my commissions featuring bookish couples lately have been in water scenes like this, so I'm definitely getting more familiar with painting people standing and sitting in water!
