I don't think they necessarily turned back? I could be COMPLETELY wrong, but I think that page 53 is from Alice's point of view; the page is focused on her and her eyes being black is an indicator that something isn't quite as alright as it seems or as she believes it to be. Page 54 is focused on Edith, her Siblings and all the other students watching; They don't know that something is going on with Alice, so the eyes in that panel appear as they normally do. If that IS the case, the the eyes in the last panel of page 54 don't appear inverted because, as far as others see it, this might just be how she is and page 54 is focused on the view of the people watching Alice.
