You'll see that the hair always grabs the attention in the ink because most of the structure of the hair is in the inks. But with something like a back, sometimes inks don't have much to them at all. Carbene's back was a simple sketch added to with more painterly strokes to define all her little muscles.

Sometimes entire sections get cut from a composition. Twi's tail hides her arms and the entirety of her back, but adds in a sense of closeness/engulfing that is essential to the piece.

Often a sketch holds all the details as patterns of color come to life in the dragon wolf sketch are left flat with just the inks.

This all shows just how much inks is a part of the whole, but not the whole on its own. Any commission that was just inks would have its own treatment on how to handle fur texture or color patterns.
