Glad to hear you liked it. A lot of the character exploration in this show is from interactions, rather than flashbacks (although there are some of those too). You could see hints of that with the chat between the Major and Togusa regarding him being human and being hired in from the police *because* he's human. They do cover why she looks like she does and dresses like she does, but not really in depth (and some reasons were cut from the anime). The Major's deep background is explored more in season 2. The intro is largely in Russian. At 03:20 in the episode, there's the title card, with the episode name "SECTION-9" at the bottom. At the top, it says "a stand alone episode". Interesting, huh? Note the lyrics of the outro, "She's a lithium flower, just about to bloom" and "How is she when she doesn't surf, I wonder what she does when she wakes up" where the "surf, I" can easily be interpreted as "suffer" when listening. I think this song is about deep depression, since lithium is a powerful antidepressant (unless you don't have depression, in which case it's just poisonous). There's also post-credits Tachikoma Theater in this show, that's worth watching.
