OC Overview | Stone Guard

Overview of Stone Guard!

🏷️Basics

The day Hearth Roll was assigned as a Stone Guard was the day her name was stripped away, replaced by a title shared by all who willingly chose this fate.

The name seemed ordinary at first, merely a reference to the dungeon’s walls. But in time, another meaning would envelop it. Those who bore the title did not just guard the stone; they became it, their bodies slowly accumulating a thin layer of material until they were indistinguishable from the very walls they watched over.

Stone Guards are volunteers from local villages, drawn by a generous offer from the Throne. In exchange for their lifelong service guarding the newly established stone dungeon, their families would be well-kept, protected, and fed until their final days.

To qualify, recruits had to meet a certain height requirement and have at least ten living relatives in the area who could accompany them to the castle on the day of registry.

Hearth Roll being a mother of many with an ill husband, she desperately volunteered and was luckily chosen among a small herd of others.

 🎭Character Values

Likes & Dislikes
Century of isolation and decay had culled her preference for life. Though a faint sense of her original self still lingers, the only thing she remembers liking is baking bread. (Its debatable if she even remembers how to bake still)

Strength & Weaknesses
With the added layer of stone upon their body, Stone Guards are enchanted to be durable and strong. Though their fleeting sanity and lackluster training and experience for true battle make them lot less useful than one might expect.

Personality & Value
Stone Guards has lost much of her original self but for Hearth there is still a sense of maternal duty and care deeply rooted inside her soul. She will refuse to cause any actual lethal harm to any creature and will only attack to Incapacitate.

🎯Episode Concepts
Duty till Death
Hearth and many others were led down into the deep dungeons. It wasn’t long before they realized the truth, they were expected to die there, sealed away with no escape. While the other guards tried to flee, perished in the attempt, or simply gave up, Hearth chose to endure, clinging to duty in the hope that something better awaited her in the end.

Hole in Stone
Surrounded by the neatly piled corpses of her comrades and surviving day by day on nothing but daydreams of her family, safe in the care of the land’s wealthiest house, Hearth’s fate seemed sealed. But when a sudden earthquake shakes the dungeon, a hole cracks open in the ceiling, flooding her world with blinding light. Among the ruins, treasures lay rotten and buried beneath the rubble. Seizing the opportunity, Hearth crawls out of the dungeon, seeking traces of her loved ones.

Hunted not Wanted
The truth of her existence and that of the dungeons had been erased from history, long buried in records lost to time. The few remnants of her past stirred whispers, reaching the ears of the princess and her council. Upon confirming it was truly her, they dispatched their modern forces to hunt her down, branding all recent misfortunes, wicked magic, rising monsters as the branching work of the awaken Stone Guard.

Heartbroken and afraid, Hearth fled. But when the so-called keepers of harmony blocked her only path to escape, she had no choice but to fight back.

🔎Trivia

📝Creators Notes.
If enough people are interested, maybe I could make a separate lore page about the “Stone Guards” in general! But for now the little details here and there within this Overview should answer some questions!

I'm going to be making a Hearth Roll Overview as well since I see them as two different, distinct entities. (-and I want to explore that part tooo)

I'm gonna show her how to make ice cream from bread. I bet she'd love the shit out of raw cookie dough. Even if she can't eat it anymore she can still see it. Her backstory is interesting, it'd make sense if the Stone Guard was in fact supposed to be successful, given having at least 10 people in the area would make for an extensive tethering to the world of the living even after death to maintain a level of care for the area and the world during such an intense dark magic practice. Regardless, it seems it worked, even if it was potentially a scam for some weird reason.
