I really like this one... DV isn't okay and I'm happy they found a way to get out

Jamie13

The point is that women have gotten very good at hiding it, but even from the conversation there’s very subtle hints. It’s increasingly sad that women are kind of trained to be very nice even when talking about their abusers. She talks about him being mad or still having a rough day at work. It’s very obvious he’s taking it out on her, why else would she take ownership of those feelings?

Basura

Yeah I realized that, almost right after I commented.. 😅

Alex

That's what sorority should look like.

Lucas Campos

We love women supporting women

Zie McCorkhill

They should make out

Antkin

And the hairstyle.

Cat Warren

I didn't see it at first or second read but in the frame that just has Thursday on it, you can see her right eye blackened. It's very faint, zoom in.

Buffy

He didn't draw them. Says that on the first page. 😊

theo

Oh, he dead.

theo

It’s giving ‘goodbye earl’ vibes

Cassie Greeley

Omg did she wear glasses because he gave her a black eye??

Eleni

She didn’t get the black eye until after the pork chops.

Becki Brothers

I noticed the sunglasses and then went back and saw the scarf. I knew something was up before, but those confirmed it.

Becki Brothers

I don’t say this enough, but your backgrounds are gorgeous!

Alex

its her right eye, it is there but its very very faint

n.

I'm glad to see this after leaving an abusive relationship.

DNL

For the sake of it being a short story and needing to impart information to the reader quickly, I think it's fine

D. Alfonso

@Dee Bee It's there, but it's very faint.

D. Alfonso

I don't see any black eye anywhere

Dee Bee

At first she wears the coat, then a scarf and ultimately the glasses

Rinaldy Capellan

You are correct. Not every woman is hiding domestic violence. I also wear sunglasses daily (I have transition lenses). But in this story, the main character is clearly a victim of worsening domestic violence from the captions. She covers her one eye the first two days, then covers both eyes with sunglasses the last day. I think it's a reasonable conclusion that the sunglasses are a visual clue to the worsening domestic violence she's suffering. If I've misread the story, I'd love to know why you think so.

Ray Cornwall

You have to reread the character's dialogue to get the hints, also if you watch closely on the main character she is hiding a black eye on the right eye.

S C A

You do realise that women wear sunglasses because it's bright outside, right? Not every woman is hiding domestic violence

Alexandra Knight

My only problem is that, while I get that the sunglasses are supposed to indicate that she's hiding domestic violence, her eyes don't look damaged. The same happens with her eyes not covered in the first two days. I love the story; I'm just thinking the visual cues could be improved to help the story.

Ray Cornwall

Didn't get it on first reading because I thought it was going to be cannibalism or vampirism or something along those lines, but then I spotted the little signs of DV and this is so much better! Love the little smile as she looks at the can in the penultimate frame

Lizzie Rowe

Oh. Oh my god you are not kidding it's so subtle. Incredible details.

LUCIIFER

good for her

evie

The scarf and the sunglasses are so subtle but so important to understand the twist. Well done! 🥺

Thia

I must say, though, I do love me a good Underwood deviled ham sandwich

Colleen Rose

The deli case appears to those who need it...

Katie Wudel

I’m from British Columbia and lone fruit and veg stands are common here too. I’ve seen baked goods too but definitely never meat lol

ShellBee

i didn't like this one 😭 in terms of the twist

Noèlia Vidal Diaz

So the way out was always there: a sandwich! The simplest and easiest! Glad she got rid of him ;)

Barbi Gala

It's even better the second time around

Dayna

justice tbh

tallasianchick

I live in Nova Scotia, and we do have these stands (for vegetables and fruits though, I've never seen one for meat :P )

Thaumatomane

This is real right? Like not with meat I don't think but aren't their unmanned food stands in parts of Canada that work on the honor system? You just find them around, leave money/venmo, grab the food and go.

Nyadnar#17

Goodbyyeeeee Earrrrlllllll! 💃🏼

Claire S

Absolutely loved this- yeah, I was wondering why she kept saying it's her fault that she is not doing enough for husband, and that he gets angry easily- I have friends who were in abusive relationships- and I was reminded... But what an ending, that little wink

Yixuan Chen

Oh

arcticfox12x

I'm not vegan because weird meat appearing in the woods but damn it really helps not be terrified of potential people eating lol

Cerrasponda

na na na na naaa naaa naaaaaaaa

pronounceableme

Daaaamn wiked

Sunny

Best one yet! I love a subtle revenge story.

Marky Myas

He had it coming all along!

Marky Myas

I didn't even notice until the sunglasses, holy shit, that's really good

Deso's Prophet

That was a really good read!

Shirley Nilkamhang

i loved it

Ana Paula De Marco

You're so right! And her body language from beginning to end. Love love love the details.

L S

I missed that! Thanks for pointing out!

Vicki Fraser

The slight shading under the sunglasses!! And the fact that she added one time of clothing /accessory everyday to cover up the abuse! Brilliant attention to detail.

Ashalaxmi Adhya

No. It's just telling a story without telling the whole story. In Perfection.

Alexander T.

❤️❤️❤️❤️👀👀👀👀

Desi M

It’s so subtle, yet so telling. She seems to be in an abusive relationship. Good for her she met the other lady!

LaFayettes artbin

I appreciate any suspicious meat story that isn't about cannibalism. Or at least, isn't revealed to be cannibalism, I can't rule anything out.

Reed A. Saur

some people just can't hold their arsenic

Lizzie

:O Very nice. Love all the subtlety in this one

Jessi RaRaRa

Ooh girl. Get it.

Joshua Heying

Good for you, lady.

Grace 'Gengar' Soria

This is metaphor, right?

Brian Kim

Reminds me of this short story on Tumblr, they both have similar vibes https://ridinkskinned.com/post/188426780699/my-arch-nemesis-cynthia-is-of-course-at-the

ravewulf

Love the subtlety

Kayrue

I feel it akin to the old fairy tales where the protagonist must find food for abusive family members, and by some miracle they find it, either via a fey like entity or unlikely spot in the woods. Then, eventually the abusive family gets greedy, as the food the protagonist brings is never enough, and something bad happens, freeing the protagonist from their bondage.

Liam Barnes

lol it represents her scruples disappearing

MsAbominable

WOOO YES

drey

There’s also a bruise on her wrist on that first day! You can see it when she says, “I hate disappointing him” :(

Nicole Zimbardi

And then they kissed

Lilium Tigrinum

GOOD FOR HER

Cassie

cause earl had to die

Shea Antoinette

From the cover, I expected something gruesome. I was a bit relieved that it wasn't, lol.

pricolatino

I think the freezer is from Hell. The way it melted the snow around it, making a circle of exposed dirt while everything else is like a meter snowed under. The ham I think is poisonous. Like the way the freezer collects payment in the form of human souls.

Pingu

Ooooh yea. It’s shaded just a smidge more. Nice catch.

Dawnette

You can even see a bruise if you look closely in the panel with sunglasses.

Katie

This isn't horror, it's justice.

Johanna Swanson-Stearns

I actually call my husband “husband” lmao

Ladytore

Hmm. The big sunglasses. The beer bottles.

Dawnette

😳😳😳

Maya Davis

She doesn’t need to cook for said abusive husband anymore, which was why she was initially going to the case for the meat. She can cook what she wants for herself now.

Kat Harding

I also thought that she started wearing scarves and glasses to hide black eyes and hand marks on her neck when she started with neither.

Pulsating

...Ambiguity works SO well for horror.

MitchellTF

Actually, polka dot, to plain green, then back...

FoxxyNerd

Anyone else notice the scarf go from plain green to yellow polka dots?

FoxxyNerd

The devil is in the details (or maybe I'm reading way too much into it), but the final meat is processed, unlike the first two options. She chose natural meats for her husband, but the blonde lady suggests a kind that is a departure from health. That type of food kills you. Sometimes, women in abusive relationships have no means to break away traditionally, so they approach with quieter, more desperate means. Of course, junk food won't kill him in a literal, real-world sense, but her taking the step to disregard his health is a step in that direction of payback.

Han Tran

So. Good. 👏🏼👏🏼 I love your collaborations with other artists for backgrounds. ✨️✨️

Robyn

Wow. Think this is my absolute all time favorite of yours. Love the empowering ending and the super small subtleties. I had to read the comic 3x (and read the comments) to fully understand. Well done

Lavender Malin

Hell yeah

Fancy

Thank you! I didn’t notice that! Now I really appreciate the story!

Sebastian Solli

A needful things style deli for victims of DV. The subtleties in this one were great. Excellent work.

Kelley Gillespie

is this hunting or gathering? :P

Ethan Farron

I think the freezer is a symbol for how focusing on your abusive partner eats away at you

Samantha Maroussis

This is cute but it’s a little weird that the woman calls her husband “my husband” in her own inner thoughts instead of thinking of his name

Chloé Soustiel

He's beating her.

Jessica St. Hill

I don’t think the ham is poisonous, probably just easy to hide poison in. We don’t know why the freezer is there

Lori L

girlbosses!

Nils Thüsing

Can someone please, please explain it to me? I get the abusive husband thing... but why is there a freezer in the middle of the woods and how did that other woman know the ham is poisonous (or was it coincidental)? Like I presume both are eating whatever is been cooked? Or why isn't she dead?

Chatura Muthukumarana

I mean he's drinking and beating her so yeah I'd say he's a deadbeat.

Kelly Broomhall

Hell yeah ladies. Forest meat for forever dinner

Fiver

That better be part 2. Unless the husband is ultimately a deadbeat.

Mark Vandevelde

Is it still horror if it's a happy ending?

Ling Ling Lok

He is not 🛌 because he is 💀. 😉

CharlesYYZ

The super subtle bruises (wrist and eye) with the progressively layered clothing.. damn. This was a good one.

Lumi

What the others said about the abusive husband, and her covering up with more layers and the sunglasses, as well as her language. But ALSO, did anyone else see the hint about the husband being an alcoholic too? There were 3(?) pints of beer next to the second dinner she cooked.

Nim Williams

Pls let there be a part two or something 😭😭

gemma minchin

It’s giving “Goodbye Earl”, and I’m SO here for it

Celia Walker

She's holding her arm more too on the last day!

D

Had to zoom in to see that one of her eyes is bruised under the sunglasses. The other woman probably picked up on it, hence her death ham recommendation. This was a good one! Now she can cook something for herself.

BirdofConsiderableSize

But… Why is there a meat case in the middle of the woods?

Erin Entringer

The subtleties with the scarf and sunglasses are a good touch

CGGuardian

It would assume she’s being abused by her husband. The scarf, then the sunglasses. It’s like a magic meat case for those in need.

Stephanie Mora

Victims of physical abuse will often cover their scars and bruises inflicted by their partner with additional layers of clothing- thulsly the scarf and glasses being added while subtle lines of dialogue show that she's a victim of domestic violence "He can be so impatient" "He gets upset so easily these days" and the most telling of all "It's my fault really" (unfortunately this is a VERY real feeling among domestic violence survivors. I myself have not yet gotten over this one completely). I'm not sure I understand any symbolism of the deviled ham being the final note, but the food is going to poison the abusive husband. The blonde used it to off her (presumed, from facial expressions) abuser. I'm not certain why she won't be back again unless she's going to off herself with meat that might be killing them both slowly.

Brandon Scott Jensen

her husband was abusive and the drviled ham will kill him the other woman did the same to her husband

orb b

Goodbye, Earl!

Bren Cole

Will there be a part 2 or is this one of those ominous u know what’s the hidden meaning where there isn’t really a need for part 2?

Celeste Garcia

Hell yeah

Allison M

The fact she comes back with a scarf and then later with sunglasses… hope he enjoys the deviled ham

Bruna Xavier

Well damn... Lol

CandyCane Benedict

I think the deviled ham will kill him, as the other woman's husband is still "sleeping peacefully" after having it for dinner

Amanda H.

Ok I'm so sorry but can someone explain this to me like I'm five, I am not good at picking up subtleties 😩 is the case full of other dead husband meat???

Catherine Nguyen

So he's an abusive ahole right? Hope he sleeps long 🥰

McKey McCrae

This one was really clever! I really liked the subtlety of the story in the art itself

Maria Ameen

The way I just fangirled over Diablitos 😂 Loved it, one of your best!

Miriam

Delicious

Patrice M Christian

I really enjoyed the subtlety in this story. Gave enough information to understand the dark story.

ChattyWhacker

Women supporting women :")

Theo Wampuszyc

I really thought this was gonna be a cannibal thing but this was so much better

Sam Townsend

Ohh ok so not all the meats are poison. Thank you!

UpstandingGoose

The devil ham isn't supernaturally cyanide, btw. If you eat deviled ham you'll just actually pass away

tj [rxxndxxrs]

She was only coming to the case to find something her husband liked. Now that he's gone, she can cook whatever she wants for herself.

Sci

So am I the only one who actually likes Deviled Ham? 😄

Opus Bloom

I love all your work, but this is one of your best so far for me. ❤️

Ashley

That deli case is a girl's girl

jealoussin

How do people even like that canned deviled ham stuff 😂 It’s way too salty.

Michelle Fast

We love a girls girl

SillyStringSoup

Literally sitting here like gurl leave him then this angel appears

Nobi Wolff

Well, now I’m hungry :T

Genavieve Collins-Huxtable

Thanks a lot everyone 💛

no name

Tell him to cook his supper his own damned self.

Marc

We love a woman who supports other women. 🩷

Priscila Nosoma

So is the other lady killing herself with the food she grabbed and that's why she won't be back? I'm confused.

UpstandingGoose

The spread killed the other person's husband, the relationship of the main character seems very abusive, so they might use it as well

Ris

She is being abused by her husband. Every day she has a new piece of clothing to hide where he has hurt her. Presumably the other woman had a similar situation, and now she…has no husband 😁

Ineffable Penguin

The blonde woman killed her husband

Vickytemps

Can someone explain? 🥹

no name

Rip lol

Jonathan Taylor

I love your comics so much! Can't wait for your book to arrive!!!

Stephanie Goodner

Me, running a delicatessen the other side of the woods: ugh, business is slow, how am going to pay for all these dates?

Ian Wickham

It’s in the places she’s covering up. New scarf, hiding where he grabbed her throat. Sunglasses to cover a bruised eye, etc

Ineffable Penguin

Lovely💜

Anilea Annuler

Ohhhhh now I saw her eye! Had to zoom in HARD 😅

Onsvaltti

Be nice to the people who cook your food ☠️

Matthew Gem

this turned out way better than i thought; i was totes expecting her to be eating parts of herself or him (unless i missed metaphors somewhere)

Emily C

Bruises? What bruises? :o I tried to re-read to see any, but didn't.

Onsvaltti

So is she slowly killing her abusive husband with the meat from the deli case? 👀

Loygdna Laurissaint

Anyone want to buy me a vowel?

Memeimee

Ohhhh it took me a minute

Emma-Lee Mitchell

yep, that seems about right

Alexandra

oh, the three beers by the side of the plate

Mariana Gomes (MiraMari)

What did the other lady grab for herself? WHAT DID SHE GRAB FOR HERSELF?!

Cory

No she can finally cook what SHE likes 🖤

Edith

😉

David McKinzie

Giulia Tofana has entered the chat

Ems

ohhh, each day it passes, she is hiding more bruises!

Mariana Gomes (MiraMari)

Now THIS is mysterious meat mystery done right!

Ansixilus

I support women’s rights but especially women’s wrongs 🫶🏼

Mila

Just enjoy your meal and take a nice therapeutic dirt nap honey.

Emerson

OOOOOOOH I love it

Cecile

Usually not the biggest horror fan but Adam Ellis horror hits differently

Aliya Neptune

DoveCakes

Oh god the subtle touch of her being more covered up in those specific areas each time! Once I noticed that it gave me chills, so well done.
