George based a lot of his stuff on actual history. For many ancient cultures, incest was not as we see it today. Egyptians, which old Valeria seem to be a bit based on, typically had Pharaohs marry someone in their own family. If you believe your blood is special then you want to keep it special by not diluting it. No understanding of genetics, of course. But in terms of preserving wealth and magical blood, it would be logical. And Egypt isn’t the only example- older cultures defined incest in different ways. For example, there was a Native American culture (and forgive me for not remembering the details- college was over 30 years ago!) that traced families through the mother instead of the father. They didn’t really consider the man to be a parent at all. So anyone related to your mother was taboo. But the male -uh, donor?- was not family. So none of his family would be considered related. So no incest taboo. Meaning, a woman could have a kid with her biological dad’s brother and their would be no problem in their minds. Weird, huh? LOL
