2024-06-13 07:11:24 +0000 UTCSo it does not really ever state in the books why, it alludes to a couple of theory’s/reasons but the consensus is that once Mormonts wife died, and Jorah was already an adult (in his 30’s + I believe) Mormont knew that Jorah would become Lord of bear island upon Mormonts death, so he decided to take the black so that Jorah could become Lord of bear island in his own right. As you know taking the black means you denounce all titles and claims to land. But as we know Jorah was caught smuggling and selling poachers into the slave trade (which he done to support his then wife’s lavish lifestyle) and of-course as you know, he was caught and sentenced to death by Ned Stark, but he ran and left for the free city’s, so he was basically exiled and spent his time before meeting dany figuring out ways he could get pardoned by the king (Robert at the time) and return home to Westeros.
