The heir of House Velaryon must be of “salt and sea” meaning they must know of ships and how to sail to lead House Velaryon bc that’s their main export. The whole idea of being a dragon rider and dying by fire or dying a “dragon rider’s death” is an honor and is what Targaryen’s strive for. If they’re gonna die it might as well be on the back of their dragon doing something glorious, thus giving them a dragon riders death.
