Long term relationships can mean that sometimes people grow apart. Being married or being with someone for a long time isn't reason enough to stay with them. You have to want to be there. Ted nor his wife did anything wrong and things don't have to be "wrong" in order for it to not work. People grow apart. It's sad, but it's not uncommon. They both seem to love each other a lot but she just isn't in love anymore. That's OK. People need other things besides just that. They have to be compatible too. They're no longer compatible. They might have been at one point and they aren't anymore. They're adults who are more than just man and wife. They're human beings who are also friends but also individual people apart from being married. Everything isnt so binary or black and white. Also, I think it's really saying something about their relationship that they're able to separate while still maintaining an obvious level of love and affection and respect for one another. Really shows the depth of their bond.
