Regarding the battle on the beach, if I remember correctly, the Saxons were unfamiliar with the concept of the Shield Wall until it was introduced by the Vikings. I’m pretty sure that the Romans fought that way but they were long gone from the British Isles (400 years) at this point. Anyway, that’s why the Saxons were so easily defeated in this skirmish.

2025-01-17 07:47:10 +0000 UTCLeave Von out of this😅 that young man still fresh and doesnt have the audience awareness and default and pressure to be politically correct as a reactor, but more so then that he's confident in his morality and recognizing behaviour he doesnt agree with but being mature and critially thinking and HUMAN enough to look outside of himself and look at the show objectively and within the context and reality of the world...characters individual choices can be questioned/judged on a fundamental human basis (sad, hapy, gut feeling, pain, angre, happiness, kindness as a recipient and provider, nurture of child, shame etc ) but it should also be qustioned analysed/judged on a fundamental human basis (hunger, self preservation, fear, sadness, loneliness, warmth, pain, etc) ....i fear Addison might be rubbing off on Brandon a lil with the diplomatic social consciousness reviews, Branon get back in the game, escape with us and WASH OFF GOT...dont let the scars of Danaerys infiltrate your view of Ragnar just yet 😂 you were right about Dani the whole time, stand on business, the writers lost their minds not her...our Dani is somewhere chilling in a multiverse, wondering how she got there like Loki🤣

2025-01-17 03:47:22 +0000 UTCHe was very upset with how his friend and comrade was killed at the end of the episode (as opposed to those friends who died fighting in Northumbria). The Vikings believed that for a warrior to go to Valhalla (essentially, a warrior's heaven where they would feast at Thor's table), they needed to die as a true warrior, fighting and with their sword in their hand. Beyond that, there are other stages of death where there is still a chance you could get into Valhalla (why when the man was executed in first episode, he smiled and acted bravely to please the gods, with hopes he'd still make it into Valhalla). In later episodes, you'll see that when a Viking is dying in battle but isn't holding his sword, his comrades will quickly put his sword into his hand before he's gone. Some Vikings also believed in Folkvangr, ruled by goddess Freyja, where some warriors would go when they died. It was supposed to be a beautiful meadow. Notably, Valhalla is mostly men but female "shield maidens" were also allowed into Valhalla when they died a warrior death. Non-warriors (those who died of disease, old age, accident, etc.) went to Hel, which was their version of the underworld. But it was not like we consider Hell. It was more of a neutral (even pleasant) place.

And it is annoying how you can judge a culture off of your own understanding, yet refuse to understand their perspective. In those times of the vikings their land wasn't farmable so their only why of living is to raid and steal, that is their entire life, that is how they were raised, and their raising shapes their life, same for everyone. So I would wish yall put a bit more thought into trying to understand why they do the things they do, and how their culture leads them to doing those things. Like you automatically dismiss their religion, then do not understand why they dismiss Christianity, it's because they do not belive in it simple as that. Now I am not saying anything they are doing is right in our times, but in those times it was all they knew and their only why to survive, just as predators feed on prey to survive, it as cut throat and all about survival of the fittest. And for another thing, in their religion the only why they will not go to valhalla, is if they die pathetically basically, like if they do without a sword on their hand, those are really the only why they will not enter valhalla, as to the viking culture, not dying in some form of battle with a weapon in your hand, is the ultimate sin. And I can tell von is trying to put himself in their perspective, and is right, they do not know of a better why to live, so they live the only why they know how to. And I am not trying to force or make anyone agree with me, i just think it would be good to put this information out their. Other then that though, the reactions have been good.

A few things that might help: this show was originally intended to be historically based. While they over Hollywooded everything, the way peoples of the past would acted around new religions is still super interesting. For the people in in this area, at this time, they would’ve beloved deeply in the fierceness of their gods. They lived in a beautiful but really harsh environment. Like most places around the world, women were rarely treated well, BUT by they did have a lot more power and equality than most other cultures. Slavery, but gender equality. It’s interesting, right? And the way into their version of Heaven? You can only get by having some kind of warrior status. Well, that’s a loose interpretation. Also, modern Europe is a lot less uptight about sex. And that can be seen throughout history.

2025-01-14 23:56:14 +0000 UTCMost people don’t know this, but it wasn’t up until the 15th century specifically the 1440s that Africans were bought as slaves by Portuguese for the first time more than 400 years after this So if a black man was seen in early medieval Europe or even around the time Vikings, they would probably think it’s awesome as there were a lot of traders of African descent that would travel along the silk road and accounts that they wrote, generally they would’ve had a great time and were treated like celebrities in certain areas. People didn’t really go out of their village and lacked any form of enlightenment or entertainment most couldn’t even read so it was something new and the common belief at the time was they were just people left in the sun too long And apologies if these little history tidbits are too annoying.

He is an adventurer at heart, which is why he is determined to sail west, regardless of what his superiors think. Ragnar understands that if he tries to change his people—forcing them to abandon who they are—they will never accept him as their leader. Just as we hold onto our beliefs and embrace our cultures, they do the same in a f*cked up way. 😅 But beyond his ambitions, Ragnar values the people who helped him achieve the impossible, and therefore grieves their loss when they pass away.

If you came to a place where people who worshiped something else tried to tell you that you were wrong, and that thier gods are the real ones. I think we know you/ we would be like... ummm nope. That is how the vikings are with christians. Also, they believe the way to Valhalla (thier version of heaven) is through being a warrior. So when they kill someone, they think that they are almost helping those people make their way to Valhalla.
