Portrait Drawing Course Term 1, Lesson 3: Cutouts

This video is Lesson 3 of the 'Learning to see' term - in this lesson I'll explain negative space and how it can be used in creating a strong underdrawing and problem solving later in a drawing. We'll practice seeing negatives spaces with some silhouette drawing exercises and I'll introduce the work of the contemporary British artist Barbara Walker. As always, to get full benefit from the course, watch one video per month, practicing for at least 2 hours per week over the course of that month, before moving on to the next lesson.

I just signed up for Draw Brighton on Friday. I love the way you teach. Thank you! I look forward to all the future videos.

Maryam Hamidi

Fantastic, thank you, I shall give them a go :)

Hi Justine! The Charcoal pencils are Koh-i-Noor 'Gioconda' charcoal pencils - they are reasonably priced and perform well. If you like a charcoal pencil which can be unwrapped, Generals charcoal pencils are also great. They are cheapest in the UK here: https://www.artesaver.co.uk/Catalogue/DRAW-SKETCH/Charcoal-Compressed/Charcoal-Pencils/Koh-i-Noor-Charcoal-Pencils-SoftDark-Grade-Box-of-12-Black-DACHP-DACHP :)
