Experimental Life Drawing next Sunday: materials list

We have our tutored Experimental Life Drawing session running next Sunday 1st December if you’d like to join us! In this monthly session Emma Prothero will be introducing a new material with a series of exercises that you can practice with her live over Zoom. We’ll be drawing together from reference images from the Draw Patreon photosets, which will be shared on the screen alongside Emma’s live demonstration. If you join live you can share in the conversation and ask Emma questions as we go – we’ll also record the session for anybody who wants to catch up later. The session runs from 3-5pm UK time on Zoom but if you are elsewhere in the world we’d love to have you at our sessions! Our theme this week:  Subtractive Painting with Oil Paint 

Materials you’ll need for this session: 

A selection of surfaces primed with gesso or white acrylic, such as; canvas, canvas board, wood panels, oil painting paper or plastic/metal sheets.

• A palette: options include wood, plastic, tear-off palettes or pots.

• Masking tape or clips.

• Rubber or latex gloves.

• Oil paint: any colour(s) of your choosing, though a darker tone is preferable (if you have one!)

• Paintbrushes of various sizes and types. Preferably bring a bristle brush, a large brush, a small brush & a soft synthetic brush (if you have them!)

• One or more of the following tools: a palette knife, cloth/rags, cotton buds, cotton pads, a silicone colour shaper, a sponge or baby wipes.

• Kitchen roll and dishwashing liquid (for cleaning).

The following materials are optional, but bring them with you if you have them!

• Oil paint mediums: Solvents/ thinners such as Odourless Mineral Spirits, Turpentine & White Spirit. Drying Oils such as Linseed, Safflower, Poppy Oil or Alkyd Mediums.

If you don’t have the right materials you’re welcome to join anyway and try the exercises with materials you do have to hand.

Extra Information  

• To join the session, just grab your drawings materials and log into the Zoom app - test it to make sure that it works with plenty of time before the class starts.  

• Once you’re logged into Zoom you can get access by clicking the link above.  

• Please use your actual name when signing in to the Zoom app. You can choose to share your video or not during the session, although we love to see your face if you’d like to keep your camera on!  

• Please don't take any photos, screenshots or recordings  

• We will make a recording of the session available for you to paint or draw from on the Patreon by Tuesday morning – this is a great chance to develop a longer portrait from the session. The recordings will be available as long as you are a Patreon supporter. Attendees videos won’t be shared on the recording.
