A commission for last_of_workers
I began my fight with Wheatley, which led me to a brief trip to the moon, which I knew was coming, but damn, it was so scary I almost messed my pants. I’m starting to think the real Chell might actually be nuts for having no fear with these kinds of things.
After the fight, I wake up to GLaDOS watching me. She seems to be in a pleasant mood. She had me on the elevator, and I immediately knew what was going on. I told her I didn’t want to leave and that I wanted her to help me get home.
She told me that Caroline wanted to help me, then she deleted Caroline from her core. I was about to flip out on her, but then some strange light came out of nowhere, and she got silent. She then sounded panicked and began to ask where we were.
She turned around a bunch of times and freaked out about her body. I was really confused. Has she gotten more corrupted somehow? That wasn’t supposed to happen, so perhaps it was my fault somehow, but then I heard her say something I couldn't believe.
She started talking about how she was just at the video game convention that I had been attending before getting here. I call out to her, and she looks towards me. She asks me for help since she’s confused and has no idea what’s going on.
I managed to calm her down and explain that we were both from the convention, but something happened that led to them being transported to a world where the Portal games were real and that both of them had been put into the bodies of characters from it.
She calmed down and looked at herself. She wasn’t super thrilled to be a robot now, but she did admit that it was sort of cool to be connected to everything. She said she felt really powerful and a lot smarter than she was before.
I let out an awkward laugh and asked her not to go mad with power. She let out a laugh and said she’d try to avoid it. I then asked her if she thought it was possible to figure out what happened or open some sort of portal to get us home.
She went silent; she said she was reviewing her recent memory from the convention and was able to detect some sort of energy field that passed over her before she was transported here. She’s now currently doing a scan of it.
After that, she said she might be able to replicate it and use it in a portal. I said that was great news and sat down next to her to wait. After a few minutes, she tells me it might take some time. So we begin to talk to each other and get to know each other.
Turns out GLaDOS was a guy before all of this, just like me. He had been attending the convention with his older sister, who was a fan of Portal, and she had convinced him to dress up as GLaDOS for the convention.
They were playing Portal 2 when the explosion at the convention happened. Now that I think of it, I actually think GLaDOS was sitting next to me when the explosion happened. I remember someone a bit younger than me in a GLaDOS costume playing as well.
He was with an older sister as well, one who had a phone call and stepped away for a minute to take the call. I wonder what happened to GLaDOS’s sister. I wonder if she ended up in a game world as well, or if she’s safe back home.
It’s hard to tell since I had been here for quite some time before GLaDOS showed up. I don’t know what the reason for that is. If some sort of condition has to be met in the world, or if maybe something back home held GLaDOS there for longer than me.
I wish I knew; I wish we had some answers, but right now we know nothing about what happened, which is why we need to make a way to connect back to our world so we can get any information. After talking for a bit more, GLaDOS said she was able to scan the energy.
Now all she had to do was build a machine that could replicate it. I was excited and told her that was great, then asked if there was anything I could do to help. She then got silent and said there was, but it was a bit weird.
I raised an eyebrow and asked her what it was. She then explained that she had a need to create tests and see them get completed, likely because of the character she ended up in. I nodded; that made sense. Wheatley had the same problem.
I tell her I’m happy to do that if it helps. She nodded and said it would, as the need to test was a bit distracting. I tell her to put me in whatever tests she already had built and I’d go through them, and while we’re at it, I tell her to have ATLAS and P-body go get the other humans.
GLaDOS agreed that would be a good idea, and we split up, thinking she was with me the whole time talking to me, which was a bit weird. Up until now, GLaDOS had been mean to me, but now that someone else is controlling her, she’s quite nice and easy to talk to.
I began to do her tests, some of which were from the game that I avoided doing earlier, and some were new ones I'd never seen. The room I just finished involved lasers, laser cubes, and mirrors, which could be moved by pressing a button.
I had to find one edgeless cube to turn the laser on, two regular cubes to press buttons to move the mirrors, and lastly, portal up to a spot and use a laser cube to aim the laser where it needed to go in order to open the door.
GLaDOS complimented me on doing so well and told me watching me solve that really made her happy, and she was working on a new test like this one that’s a bit more advanced and can’t wait to see if it stumps me.
As I went into the elevator for the next test, we talked some more. I asked her about her favorite things. She started to talk about anime she liked and hobbies that she had, and she even told me about her big sister, whom she misses dearly and hopes is okay.
I told her that they were okay, just far from home, so she either still had to be at home or safe in another world, but either way, we’d find her and go back home. That made her happy, and I walked into the next testing room.
This one used more of the new ice mechanic I had messed around with. This time I needed to use it to create pathways over water and make walls that prevented lasers and turrets from hitting me. At the same time, though, I had to use portals to guide two lasers to the correct spot.
It was a bit tricky to get both lasers in place while also making a path for myself, as there was only one correct way to get it, and one portal in the wrong place, even by an inch, made the test impossible to complete, but in the end I got it.
I walk through the door and into the elevator as GLaDOS tells me how good I did. She then asks me if I’m tired and need a break. I shrug and say I wouldn't mind sitting down for a minute. So instead of a new chamber, she sent me to a nice bedroom.
It had a comfy-looking bed, a table and chairs, and most importantly, a fridge with things to eat and drink. I thank GLaDOS and tell her that now that I think about it, I haven't eaten or drunk anything since getting here, and I was starving.
She laughs and tells me to enjoy, saying she put something extra special in the fridge for me. I get curious and walk over and open it. Inside had a few premade meals that GLaDOS had unfrozen for her to eat, but next to it was something even better.
It was cake. I took it out and looked at it. It was a whole chocolate cake. It had chocolate frosting with chocolate shavings all over it. I brought it to the table and cut myself a big piece. I couldn't believe it, the Portal cake! It’s no longer a lie!
I shove a big piece into my mouth and fall backward into my chair, overwhelmed by its amazing taste. GLaDOS was still watching and called me silly for being that into the cake. I look at her and laugh; she was right, but any Portal fan knows how important this cake is.
I told her I wished she could try it, and that’s when I found out that while she can’t eat things, she can simulate tastes, so she did so. Then, like me, she was in awe about how amazing it tasted. We then sat there, basically enjoying cake together, which was nice.
It was the first time since I got here that I was able to relax, and I know GLaDOS hadn’t been here long, but I’m sure it's the same for her. Things are still scary right now because we know next to nothing about what’s going on.
I hope it’s not like that for long, but at least I’m not alone here. I have GLaDOS and she has me, and together I’m sure we’ll find a way out of here. Until then, we’ll be each other's friends and help each other. She’ll make sure I have food and things to drink, and I’ll complete any test she throws at me.
