It was the year 948, the land filled with knights, royalty, and most importantly to our story Bandits. Benjamin Shades was one such bandit. He spent most of his life running from town to town, stealing killing, and hiding in caves.
Today was no different. He had just robbed a traveling merchant for a whopping two hundred gold and was now running back to an abandoned knight’s outpost to avoid getting caught by any potential heroes who would try to strike him down.
Things hadn’t always been like this for Benjamin, once he was a young child squiring for a knight that was stationed in his home village. It was always his dream to grow up and protect his home just like the knight he served.
That dream however was taken away from him when the kingdom was invaded by the Phyastian Empire. All the knights and people from his town were killed, and the houses were burned to the ground.
The only reason Benjamin survived was because his night hid him away. Benjamin spent days hiding, with no food or water, listening to the attacker's party and destroying before they finally left his village. That’s when he came out of hiding and saw the damage.
After that, he swore to get revenge and had planned to go to the capital and sign up for the army, but as you can imagine being a child with no money trying to travel across the land was nearly impossible.
He eventually had to resort to stealing food and water, and after a couple of years, he was recruited by a bandit group and traveled with them for many years. Over those years he got really good at stealing, sneaking around, and killing if necessary.
Eventually, the group made a name for itself, and with it came a lot of unwanted attention. That led to most of them getting killed or arrested, and Benjamin decided to abandon the group to reduce his chances of either happening to him.
After that, he found this old outpost and started using it as his base of operations. It was honestly perfect, it was super hard to get to, a decent away from the towns, and crawling with monsters at night.
So after every robbery, Benjamin would return and fortify his base and wait out for a few days before returning to the main road to conduct more robberies. Tonight, however, while fortifying the base, the floor collapsed and Benjamin fell several feet.
Once the dust cleared and Benjamin was able to sit up he looked around. He didn’t even know there was a basement here, and by the looks of it, it had been sealed off long before they abandoned the outpost.
Benjamin started exploring the new areas of his base and he eventually found a secret armory filled with pure Blazed steel equipment. Benjamin couldn’t believe it, this was an amazing score, Blazed steel was nearly indestructible, and only given to holy knights in the capitol.
He started picking through it looking for anything that would fit him or any weapons that felt good in his hands. That’s when he found a short sword on a pedestal towards the back of the room that was calling his name.
It was abled as Soulstiker, and apparently, it was an enchanted sword. Benjamin began to read the notes that the previous owner left behind next to it. Apparently, a person was supposed to put their soul into it to power it.
Then their partner would use the sword to fight. Benjamin was surprised, he never knew that the Holy Knights would be in pairs this way, with one being the weapon and the only being the knight. He flipped the note, and there was a weird sentence on it.
Benjamin was just barely able to read it, as some of it seemed like the writing used by the knight he was trained by, but the rest was kind of gibberish. Once he finished reading it, Soulstiker started to light up.
Benjamin was amazed at how bright it was and reached his hand over to it and touched it. That's when everything went dark. Benjamin woke up sometime later feeling disoriented and his body was unusually stiff.
He tried to get up but found himself completely unable to move. He was still able to see, but couldn’t turn his head. He could also hear, as the sounds of birds filling the room, along with a slight whistling from the wind.
Benjamin had no idea what was wrong with him, but after some time the wind picked up the note that was left by the Soulstriker and blew it into his view. That’s when he realized what was going on, he had accidentally put his soul into the sword.
He had no idea how to reverse it, or if there was a way to reverse it, and because of that he was forced to remain her alone, for who knows how long, but likely forever. Two days pass, and Benjamin is nearly going crazy being left alone with his own thoughts.
Suddenly he heard the voice of a woman calling out. He started to feel hopeful, maybe the woman would come down and somehow set him free. Well, the woman sure did come down to the armory, and to Benjamin’s surprise, she was a young holy knight.
She walked around the room, being quite surprised at the amount of armor and weapons made from blazed steel, just like Benjamin had days ago, and then finally found Soulstriker which Benjamin was now inside of.
She picked him up and seemed happy about finding him. She mentioned how the capital hasn’t had anyone willing to become a weapon lately, so she had yet to receive her holy weapon. She also mentioned that because it was lighting up she knew there was already a soul in this sword.
She started talking to Soulstiker, exactly like it was a person, which makes sense since it was technically a person. She held the sword in front of her face. She asked Benjamin if he’d like to be her new partner and take on the evil empire with her.
Benjamin had wanted to turn back, but hearing her offer reminded him of all the awful things he had seen and the things that happened to him because of the empire. He knew that if he turned back, he’d never be able to stop them, but as her sword and partner, he could finally get revenge.
Suddenly Soulstriker began to shine, and the woman smiled thanking him for joining her. The woman removed his sheath and attached it to her hip, then she slid Soulstiker into it. Then from there, they returned to base.
When the woman returned she told her superiors that the bandit had long fled the base, but she did find an old storehouse of blaze steel that was all brand new. Then she showed off Soulstiker to her boss.
Her boss was impressed and agreed to let her keep Soulstiker as her new partner. They would later send a unit to collect the contents of the armory, but the woman and Soulstiker would long be gone from that base.
With a holy weapon in hand, the woman was now permitted to be on the front lines of the Holy war with the empire. Together they would strike down their enemies, and eventually end the war by driving Soulstiker into the heart of the evil empire.
