Life in the inner palace is really tough damn, especially for those of lower status! No matter how much the other ladies tried to undermine Maomao, if she had failed and Lihua had died, Maomao probably would have taken all the blame and faced execution for not following the Emperor's orders. ๐๐ก Wow, even the eunuch who couldn't find the powder got in trouble. It's crazy how little respect higher-ranked people have for those below them. Even the tiniest mistake can lead to punishment, and sometimes, even if someone did nothing wrong, they could still be blamed. That's probably why Maomao has been super careful to keep her distance and stay out of trouble, but we can see that her curiosity sometimes gets the better of her lmao. Since it's known that the Emperor favors Lady Gyokyuo, with the prince's death and Lady Lihua being sick, her ladies-in-waiting are at risk of losing a lot. Their main goal is certainly to keep Lihua looking beautiful to catch the Emperor's attention again, so they prioritize her looks over her health, which is why they focus on makeup and burning incense instead of giving her a bath. ๐๐๐ ๐ป In this situation, the ladies-in-waiting are really ignorant and foolish, but even if they weren't, it's hard to trust outsiders, especially since Maomao is Gyokuyo's lady-in-waiting, who is basically their main competition. They believed Maomao was just there to mess things up and prevent Lihua from getting better or catching the Emperor's eye again, so they just tried to sabotage her. The moment when out of anger Maomao slapped the guilty lady was totally epic in the episode, haha, but it could have really gotten her into serious trouble. Luckily, Jinshi was there in the room to back her up just in case.

However, I think it's more accurate to say that she's interested in her own self-preservation and her own sense of right and wrong. It's the same instinct that prompted her to intervene with the children in the first place. She just had the added incentive of potential death of she failed to save the consort. The term "righteous anger" comes to mind. It was a knee jerk reaction to knowing that this woman put superficial beauty over her mistress's health. That she had intentionally continued to use this banned substance because she thought she knew better. It's one of my favorite Maomao moments because it shows how deeply she cares about the health of others and how seriously she takes her job.
