I haven't read the novel of this show, but i believe they just wanted to show us a guy transported to another world. Is past is basically irrelevant and never talked about. And in a way the show is always happening in the present. In a way :) I tried my best to explain without spoilers but it's hard to know what someone considers a spoiler.
