well, of course they will need to grow if they ever want to get to the bottom of everything and beat the Sins if they get in their way, but: to be fair they are only weak when compared with the other characters we've seen so far, but for their age they are exceptional. If you compare Mustang with Elric, it's also worth considering that a) Mustang is (if the info I looked up is correct) 29 at that point while Ed is still 15 and b) Mustang fought in the Ishvalan War (even if maybe not for the full duration), which trained his abilities in a way no formal practice can mirror; I doubt Mustang was as competent when he was in Ed's age.

There's a fight that was cut out from Brotherhood earlier, call Flame vs Metal (check youtube), where Mustang absolutely trashed on Edward in a mock battle like it was a circus show
