both children were boys.

So why would the Empress Dowager want to give away her child? I’m making an assumption here because I can’t remember if it was ever said what sex the baby who died was. What if the Empress Dowager’s baby was a girl? Remember the previous Emperor was sexually interested in very young girls. What if the Empress Dowager had a daughter and wanted to protect her from the Emperor’s inclinations. The baby swap would be her way of getting the baby girl away from the Emperor.

I think I’ve figured out the reason for the swap. Ah-Duo wanting her child to have a better life makes sense but she must have had accomplices and what would be in it for them? There had to be people on both ends to pull this off. I actually think the swap wasn’t Ah-Duo’s idea but she went along with it so her child could have a better life. I actually think it was the other mother - the Empress Dowager’s - idea to do the swap and she recruited MaoMao’s father to help pull it off.

Well, a quick google search and it’s true that honey may be bad for infants less than 1 year old. It may contain botulism. It seems that infants less than 1 year old don't have the guts bacteria to fight botulism. For everyone else honey is perfectly fine. They lead us on for most of the episode but in the end you were right. About the baby swap. Yes Current Lishu is afraid of honey because she almost died. So she would tell people that honey is dangerous. It’s so sad about Lishu and Ah-Duo 🥺 Jinshi already knew most of it thought his own investigation so There is no out for Fengming 🥹 Maomao knows what she is doing. Putting an extra layer as protection. 👍 She is so savvy so it makes sense for her to take precaution. She knows what it’s like for commoners. 🤣 Poisonous flower 🤣 It’s so Maomao. See something poisonous go directly to taste it 🤣 So last episode the person who was drinking, whom we thought was Jinshi, was actually Ah-Duo. Pushing the similarity even more. The reason for Lishu poisoning by Fengming was truly the honey. Since leaving the palace was already decided and it’s not like she is going to be kicked out homeless to die. She had a palace in the south away from here. And from the scene at the top of the wall Ah-Duo is content with it. So no real reason to poison Lishu to make Ah-Duo stay longer. The lady that drowned and Fengming sacrificed herself for Ah-Duo. That is what Maomao can’t relate to. To have someone you died for even without them knowing the full truth. Jinshi and Ah-Duo being face to face there is no denying the family resemblance. I’m not sure Jinshi knows that Ah-Duo is his mom but I suspect that he does after we saw him cry with Maomao at the wall. The swap was Ah-Duo doing and she kept it secret. She thought her baby would be more protected as an emperor's son because of what happened during the birth. She saw her baby was neglected vs the emperor baby. I’m not sure the previous emperor knew. I suspect not or he would never let it pass. Maybe the current emperor knew, hence he kept Ah-Duo around. I don’t know. At the end I’m kind of loss as to what the relationship is with Maomao and Fengming. After the episode. Ok we are in the thick of things and so many mysteries are revealed piece by piece. I do agree with you that Jinshi knows that his mom. I think Maomao's father was exiled because he knew of the switch and the baby's death was an excuse. They put it on him that the baby died so here the perfect excuse to exile the people that knew too much 🤔 That girl killed herself because they were going to find that it’s Lady Ah-Duo entourage that wanted to poison Lishu. So they need someone to punish someone. By killing herself she made the perfect scapegoat and she can’t answer any question that could compromise other people. If she would have confessed she would have been executed anyway but after interrogation. So she drowned herself. Another possibility is that it is Fengming that killed her. I could totally see Fengming killing to give a scapegoat and prevent any more questioning. I’m somewhat leaning more toward Fenming being a murderer than the lady suicide. However, now that Fengming is dead we will never know. Who wants to die for someone else. It comes back to Maomao not being able to relate to it. It’s hard to understand that type of devotion. This show is way more complex than at first glance. And I’m glad for it. Take Care 😋

I'm still watching the reaction but I'll just add my thought to the baby swap.

Maomao guessed that Ah-duo may have swapped the baby with the former emperor's baby secretly, which would be crazy if it's true because like you said, how could she do it? Maybe the current emperor knows? I don't know, but according to Maomao's guessing, Ah-duo thought her son would be treated better as the (former) emperor's son. What's true is that the baby raised as her son died of the honey poison, which is known as botulinus bacteria. As for the relationship between Maomao and Fengming, it's not actually her family but her kidnappers who sold her to the palace. They sold her pretending to be her family so part of her salary working as a servant is sent to them. One of them somehow happened to be connected to the Fengming family.

And my complete bat-shit theory is that is was actually a triple baby swap. Fingmeng and Maomao's Dad had a son, Ah-Duo has a son, the empress has a daughter. The empress and emperor don't want a daughter. Ah-Duo wants her son to have a better life. Fingmeng will do anything for Ah-Duo. They do the triple swap, the empress's daughter becomes Fingmeng's, Ah-Duo's son becomes the empress's, and Fingmeng's son becomes Ah-Duo's. My reasoning, the baby had grey hair like Maomao's dad.

Steven

Also my guess for the Fingmeng relationship is that she is Maomao's mom and the reason she's mad at her Dad is because he exposed the baby switch.

Steven

I think it was Ah-Duo's and her ladies doing. I don't think anybody but them knew, until later.

Steven

But why would they even allow the babies to be switched in the first place. Like why did the emperor even want to? What was wrong with his baby??

Chise+Elias

I think Maomao's guess was that Ah-Duo knew her son would have a better life if he was the empress's child, so had them switched.
