2023-12-18 17:36:04 +0000 UTCThe other thing the show runners do is to treat the straight romance (Jin Zixuan and Jiang Yanli) in the same way as the gay romance. You never see them kiss or openly declare their love. They don’t even hold hands . You don’t see the wedding and are only told about it as a plot point. All you see is a romantic gesture followed by lovingly staring into each other’s eyes which is what the main couple do the entire series. It’s like they are saying- in this production this is how we will portray romantic love.

There's also the fact that buttons on the robe tassles/drape things Lan Zhan wears are only worn by married men... and he doesn't wear them in the flashback, only in the current part when he found Wei Ying again. They couldn't come out and say they're gay in the show, but they do SO much visually to say exactly that, it's amazing. (I learned the button thing online, so take with a grain of salt- may be incorrect as I'm not a student of Chinese history nor am I Chinese. If I'm wrong, please correct me!) Also, the upcoming story arc is my FAVORITE! I can't wait!

Loads of symbolism there, especially with using roosters instead chickens. :) VERY definitely queer coded! There's lots of coding throughout the series, especially in these later (current-time) episodes.

You can see how much people love it, Lan Wangji & Wei Wuxian is definitely one of the most popular ships in the world these years.. I remembered they were No.1 ship of 2020 AO3 ships stats?? and last year they were still No.17 of Tumblr most popular ships Top100!! THIS IS CRAZY.. And another ship Hua Cheng & Xie Lian from TGCF/Heaven Officials' Blessing (same author as MDZS) was No.40 in this chart. This author is magical. I hope you can check out Heaven Officials' Blessing donghua too!! It's really amazing!!

IMHO, as an adaption of the books it does some things better than The Untamed. But due to the length of the episodes it is sometimes a bit rushed. It also has a lovely soundtrack.
