Glad you mention the complex set of emotions. One of my faves about this show. I feel like there is so much exploration of the human condition. Firstly, how people act when all hope is lost. Then, family relationships, the reasons people choose to die (because we have 3 people with 3 pretty different stories), ... Also, interesting to think about what is the point that you should step in when a friend seems a little off. I remember reading a book about domestic violence (But I love him by Amanda Grace) which was written in reverse chronology. The author said she wrote it in reverse specifically because of "hindsight is 20-20." Knowing that domestic violence is coming, the reader sees a certain point, and says, THERE! That's the point when she should have gotten out. By telling the story backwards, we can't judge. Same thing with Madoka. We know that she dies, so we judge. But haven't we all been in a situation where somebody said something a little iffy? If we are lucky, nothing comes of it, but only when it does go wrong can we see all the coulda-woulda-shouldas. Re disassociating from his mother... We've seen enough Asian shows to know that parents are gods here. They do questionable things in so many of the series and the kids just have to put up with it thanks to Confucian theories of filial piety. So for Masumi to cut ties, that is unimaginably huge. Also, phone on eternal vibrate = mood
