My thoughts are that Xue Yang loved Xingchen, however because he is a psychopath who doesn’t understand people and positive emotions, he interprets that love as obsession and ownership. He loves Xingchen but also sees how pristine and better than him he is, so sullying him is his way of making them more compatible. He stayed with him for 3 years, and being able to control Xingchen’s morality gave Xue Yang a feeling of ownership like none other. Plus Xingchen was the only one who has been nice to him his whole life without expecting something in return.

2024-06-15 08:52:16 +0000 UTCI believe Xue Yang both loved and hated Xiao. It was not necessarily a romantic love, though. Love because he treated him well and he wanted to be around him. Hate because Xiao was an innately good person. As much as Xue Yang wanted to be around him, he also needed to “taint” him. This is justify himself. Hope this is clear.

The thing about MDZS/CQL is that although it's a Wuxia it is heavily influenced by the political and social caste system, set of course by the so called elite or "gentry" families, yet doesn't really necessarily mean that they are strong or have high cultivation. They are just influential because they have resources and smaller clans sucking up to them. Along with this is the so called "righteous path" layered with the different disciplines, tenets and skills of the sword and qi control. Which is why any cultivation not based on "the sword's way" or qi control are deemed unorthodox. Now the thing with this is that learning the righteous path in cultivation is also heavily influenced by politics and social caste. Best example are the Jins 🙄, who think of themselves as elites yet not anyone, and I meant ANYONE, stood out to be in that HIGH CULTIVATION level, nor anyone have shown attention-worthy spiritual energy 🤷🏻♀️. Then here's our little devil, Xue Yang, who grew up in the streets and experienced all the "evils" and injustice in their world, who day and night had to fight to survive, who by himself learnt some skills of the cultivation world and showed promising skills yet could not be a proper cultivator. At a very young age, without no one to guide him, he learnt how to survive and from all his experiences came to believe that the world will never be kind to people like him, made it his life mission to avenge his childhood and completely eliminate those who wronged him, with interest 🙃. And all these just because someone from a well-off family betrayed him and crushed his innocence when all he wanted were those freaking candies T___T What also makes Xue Yang interesting is that he doesn't abide by the rules nor he craves to be acknowledged and be part of any clan. It's HIS RULES. From the very moment he first appeared his character had been very consistent. You can't control me, yes I can do some work for you and that's because I am enjoying it and these things amuses me. I mean from the very beginning, he really didn't have any "interest" in the Stygian metal. He was just trolling around. The only motivation his character had was to avenge his fingers (and wipe out smaller clans 🙃). Then enters this beautiful man whose life mission is to eliminate all evil with his equally handsome cultivation partner. Xingchen was everything Xue Yang is not, his antithesis. While Xue Yang grew up seeing all the evil and the evil ways of the cultivation world, Xingchen was pure and believed in the innate goodness of people, and innocently so. The resentment Xue Yang felt towards Xingchen is that of something he couldn't comprehend yet at the same it attracts him. There's also the fact that this person won't leave him and his business alone. And so Xue Yang being Xue Yang had only one option to deal with this annoying yet attractive man and that is to crush everything Xingchen believes in. But joke's on him coz Xingchen did not break and chose to sacrifice himself (his eyes for this matter). And fate made it that the person to save Xue Yang when he was "executed/punished" is Xingchen. Putting aside the romantic feelings, Xue Yang did treat Xingchen as an important existence. It's like finally finding a place where he belongs. It was not instantaneous as he still harbored resentment towards his and Xingchen's prior encounter. It was a new and confusing world for Xue Yang, learning how having someone who doesn't want to kill or threaten you --yeah, Xingchen did want to capture him for his crimes and be punished, but he never wanted to kill him? Coz if he did, he could easily kill the brat right then and there - and how receiving kindness and help without giving back felt. Xingchen was the first person to show him compassion and warmth which he was deprived of since young. So even if he hates to admit it, his resentment gradually faded and he ended up forgetting whatever malicious intent he had towards Xingchen so much so that he eventually finds himself enjoying "their domestic life" and "helping" the latter in his own ways -- from threatening vendors who dismisses Xingchen, to taking revenge for him when he knew of Chang Pin's betrayal. He was, in his own way, going to protect what he had at that moment; he was going to protect his light that is Xingchen. Warped. dysfunctional and broken as he is, Xue Yang is just a kid. His way of thinking is very simple , kill or be killed, hurt me and I'll destroy your whole clan-- simple and deranged 🙃. And so when Mr.Cultivation partner Song Lan appeared and threatened his little "home" crazy instinct kicks in. Yet very subtly, we can see traces of his care for Xingchen especially when he went on about how poorly Song Lan treated Xingchen and even blamed him for what happened to the Snow White Pavillion (as if it wasn't Xue Yang who did it to severe the relationship of the two 🙃🙃🙃) and for being the reason of Xingchen's blindness. Everything would have been just like another day but witnessing the whole thing A-Qing told Xingchen everything which led to the confrontation. What's interesting in this is that both Xingchen and Xue Yang were hanging on thin threads at that time. Both wanting to deny the events that transpired and both seeking for a glimmer of hope in that moment-- something, anything that they could hold onto. Caught off-guard by Xingchen's attack, Xue Yang naturally flipped to his warped and crazy self to face Xingchen as this is the only way he knows how to deal with things. Yet very subtly, we could see in his words and micro-expressions that he was just waiting for the right timing and he would have eventually told Xingchen his identity while having the hopes of continuing how things were. We could see that he wanted Xingchen to know him, to understand him and to accept him (even going as far as telling Xingchen his traumatic past and the root of all his madness). If it was any other cultivator, Xue Yang wouldn't have done so. He'd just slash their throat then bye. But this is Xingchen, his benefactor, his savior, his light. On another end, there's Xingchen, who despite of hearing the truth still showed his righteousness by not going all murderous towards Xue Yang. This also hints that he did care for the brat and is ready to listen to him and his reasons, then judge him after. Which is very in-character of Xingchen as it solidifies his upbringing, his demeanor, his motivations and his views and beliefs as a cultivator from the Baoshan lineage. Hearing Xue Yang's reasons, Xingchen deemed everything unacceptable yet we could see that he is still attempting to shed light on Xue Yang and make him realize his crimes and eventually repent. Xue Yang missing the true intent of Xingchen took it as his last hope disappearing and snapped. Just went on full crazy "this-is-why-I-hate-you" mode on Xingchen shoving in the fact of how blind (metaphorically xD) Xingchen is to the filthy reality of the cultivation world. Seeing the unbreakable stance of the latter Mr.Stupid Crazy Brat just went and decided to drag him in the filth he was in and told him the truth about their hunts and as if that wasn't enough to torment Xingchen's guilt, Crazy Brat served the icing on top of the cake and just went , "Then why don't you ask this man if I was telling the truth. Do you know who you just killed earlier?" Which Xingchen then answered with an eternal nope. Way to go extinguishing your only light crazy brat 🤷🏻♀️. It is then we see that broken and warped as he is, Xue Yang was genuine with how he treated Xingchen during the years they lived together. He cared and was deeply fond of Xingchen. Not as much as a romantic fondness (NOTHING's COMING IN BETWEEN THE SONGXIAO COUPLE GOAL *^*) but something like a baby chick who follows the mother hen wherever. He was his safe place. Needless to say the boy was shocked and didn't really intend to bring about Xingchen's death. His maniacal laugh is his defense system as he doesn't really know how to react seeing Xingchen take his own life right before his eyes. Nothing sank in him until Xingchen breathe his last with few broken spiritual cognition left. He never intended nor expected it to happen but seeing his only light slip away broke all his defenses and we see that even a deranged warped person as Xue Yang can shed helpless desperate tears. Xue Yang cried. No, he effing desperately wailed for Xingchen to come back. The desperation went as far as him turning to Wei Ying for help but he would rather die than let anyone know of this nor the truth behind his intention in reviving Xingchen. 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺

The masked man…who used to be a disciple at the cloud recess, but was thrown out, and is now hanging out with the Jin clan. Which is why he knows both styles? The second I won’t spill it out completely but the commercial was important!!!! That whole sequence I was yelling at you to pay attention. Pay attention right before the commercial and to the commercial. It’s all there!!!

2023-10-14 14:20:49 +0000 UTCI really like how they portray both relationships: Wei Wuxian and Lan Zhan, and Xiao Xingchen and Song Lan. It's basically the same relationship portrayed with different characters and different scenarios. Wei Wuxian and Lan Zhan go out there, even while they were high schoolers, to fight against evil together (even if when they were young Wuxian was joining Lan Zhan by his own will without really taking into account Lan Zhan's opinon lol). Xiao Xingchen and Song Lan go out there fighting against evil monsters together. Wei Wuxian and Song Lan wear black robes. Lan Zhan and Xiao Xingchen wear white robes. Wei Wuxian and Lan Zhan are soulmates. Xiao Xingchen and Song Lan are soulmates. Wei Wuxian dies, leaving Lan Zhan devastated. Xiao Xingchen dies, leaving Song Lan devastated. And when Lan Zhan says "how fortunate" while looking at Wei Wuxian, he is referring that he is fortunate compared to Song Lan because he was able to have his soulmate back with him while Song Lan can't have Xiao Xingchen back in his life. A beautiful comparison of two identical couples, one with a happy ending and the other with a tragic ending. They are also showing a comparison between Wei Wuxian-Lan Zhan and Lan Xichen-Meng Yao. When everyone was suspecting Wei Wuxian, Lan Zhan was the only one defending him and not believing the suspicions. Now its Lan Xichen who is defending Meng Yao and he doesn't believe the suspicions, hence why Lan Zhan and Lan Xichen exchanged an understanding look while having the conversation. Lan Zhan understands his brother's position in this matter because he was also in that position in the past.

2023-10-14 10:07:11 +0000 UTCIn the novel you can read/see that Xiao Xingchen and Song Lan are soulmates and their love for one another was true, and during their time apart Xiao Xingchen cared for Xue Yang but not romantically and of course he didn’t know it was Xue Yang during that whole time, but through the kindness he showed Xue Yang began to love him but since he had no concept of what love was he showed it by becoming obsessed and wanting to control Xiao Xingchen. As a fan of the drama and the novel I love Wei Wuxian and Lan Zhan, but I think because of their tragic ending I wish their was a novel/series dedicated to Xiao Xingchen and Song Lan

That and the junior cultivators! they're so cute, it's great. I don't know if you've noticed him, but the guy in red who noticed Ah Qing's cuteness in the beginning of the arc and was sobbing at her grave at the end is one of my favorite side characters-Ouyang Zizhen. Him, Jin Ling (the grumpy nephew), Lan Sizhui and Lan Jingyi have the cutest little friendship going on and it makes me so happy.

Xingchen was probably one of the few people who took care of and befriended Xue Yang without wanting anything in exchange. I've always taken the candy scene to mean that. Cultivators don't always have alot of money and if you remember A Qing said xingchen didn't charge for what he did yet even with little money he still spared a few to buy xue yang and A Qing 2 candies everyday. The book explains it better how xingchen finally realized it was xue yang I don't want to get into details in case you want to read it yourself. On another note both the anime and book both display wei Wuxian's abilities differently than the series just puting this out there in case you want to check it out

2023-10-14 01:14:38 +0000 UTCdon't know abt the novel, but for the show, i think it was showing that xue yang made a real connection (not romantic love in my opinion) with xichen and yeah, if XY didn't ever have a secure connection as a kid, someone being kind to him and Xichen unintentionally touching on a childhood trauma or need... yeah, i could absolutely see this being a huge deal to XY. i agree with your theory of him enjoying the companionship of having a rival to "play with." to me, both of those things together, plus the shock of xichen taking himself out of XY's game by his own hand, led to very complicated grief for XY. very tragic :-(

2023-10-14 00:13:17 +0000 UTCI tend to think the thing w Xue Yang was that he spent his whole life convinced - and confirming within himself - that true goodness didn't exist. And then he ended up finding comfort in Xiao Xingchen, not only in having him as a friend but also likely in finding an escape from who he was. I think he really loved Xingchen, who was genuinely kind, but bc he himself had never been loved or loved anyone else, he lacked the context to define his own feelings. He was such a broken person, rotted almost all the way through, that all the could do was translate how he felt into something he understood: wanting to subject someone to his bitterness and hatred, wanting to lash out. It was the only time in his life when he managed to enjoy being with someone, and when Song Lan returned and his presence threatened that, he did what at that point came naturally to him in convincing himself he didn't really *need* Xingchen, bc it had always just been a game to him. Then, when he couldn't make Xingchen into a puppet, all that grief he'd been sure he wasn't feeling just came rushing in. Xue Yang is such an interesting character to me, honestly. There are so many ppl who just stan the hell out of him which I never totally understand bc despite the momentary intersection between his and Xingchen's lives when he felt happiness, he rlly had become just the worst sort of person. But that *one* thing added so many brilliant layers to him, made him someone worthy of some sort of compassion, you know? (Sorry for the rant. lol. Ive thought about this way too much, obvs 😂) Loving your reactions to this!! Cant wait for the next! 😊
