The Untamed 陈情令 - Episode 50 | REACTION

Comments

I will still defend Meng Yao to my dying breath. It's not his fault he is a girlboss 😔💅 Femme fatale, making 3 major sect leaders lose their mind about him, holding them in a hold with vibes of psychosexual shackles. {simp mode} Seriously though, some nie bros fans often like to counterpose Nie Mingjue to Meng Yao as some source of virtue, but it is such an oversimplification. And I do love both Nie Mingjue and Nie Huaisang, I love them a lot. Nie Mingjue is clearly (and as stated in interview with MXTX) a foil for Meng Yao and vice versa, someone who breaks but cant bend VS someone who bends but cant break. He was, I want to remind, very adamant about Wen remnants (including Wen Ning, Wen Qing, A-Yuan, his grandma etc) deserving the rough treatment and later deserving to be killed. He didn't consider Wen Ning's and Wen Qing's contributions to the Sunshot Campaign - saving lives of Jiang Cheng (major sect leader heir) and Wei Wuxian (who was instrumental in Sunshot Campaign success, and so was Meng Yao) - he didn't consider these to be meaningful enough to absolve them of the guilt of being Wen and their forced association with Wen Ruohan. Which no doubt is fueled by the trauma of how his dad died due to Wen Ruohan schemes. Meng Yao asking him "so you think all people you killed deserved it?!" happens after all the Wen remnants are slaughtered, apart from hidden and saved A-Yuan and concealed Wen Ning, who is also assumed destroyed (which Nie Mingjue very much wanted since he accidentally killed some Nie soldiers). Not all directly by Nie Mingjue's hand, but with his contribution and intent to kill. As for Nie Huaisang - there is no indication that he is awfully sorry for collateral damage, at least not more so than Meng Yao is himself for his own. Wei Wuxian clearly states that the person who exposed Meng Yao didn't care for the Juniors when this person lead them to Xue Yang's lair (with trail of freshly killed cats!), if Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji were just a little bit slower or weaker the Juniors or some of them would have died and that person - Nie Huaisang - would just blame it on Meng Yao, it's a win-win situation for him. This is not my speculation, this is speculation of Wei Wuxian which is assumed at this point to be a reliable narrator and mastermind detective, piecing things together. Basically, Wei Wuxian was just lucky that Nie Mingjue wasn't killed by him when he was marching against him. As a result, Wei Wuxian by the end of it all doesn't consider Nie Huaisang a particularly good person, not particularly bad either, but someone he doesn't want to associate with and doesn't want scheming with collateral damage anymore (and trusts he will not), the coldness of his attitude to him is seen in that one scene. Wei Wuxian is done with all that shit, he just wants to fuck his husband and later maybe go nighthunting with his son, nephew and their friends and then fuck his husband again. My point being while Nie Mingjue and Nie Huaisang didn't quite commit crimes on the same level as as Meng Yao, they were - from birth - in much more favourable and comfortable life circumstances. And these three characters are people with complicated flaws and only by seeing them we can let them and their relationship between each other shine, however we would like to interpret them. (xiyao is otp, but gods I have a thing for Nie Mingjue/Meng Yao - the passion + super messy divorce - and Nie Huaisang/Meng Yao - from princeling/butler twinks to betrayal + schemes + psychological games).

🤧🤧🤧🤧🤧 CQL dropped hints clear hints on the mastermind from ep1~ Huaisang was there from the very beginning... Also, if you look at it, they have highlighted one item that served as the biggest hint -- the fan, Huaisang's fan~ And you should watch the two spin-off movies

Finally got around to watch the last few episodes with you! It was an amazing time and gave me a good excuse to rewatch the show again xD Others have already given recommendations of what things to watch, like the character songs! They really add a lot and the composer Lin Hai is actually a really big fan of the show/books and if you read the specific character lyrics for WWX and LWJ the romance becomes very obvious! Also I'm not sure if you already talked about it in a video (and i just missed it) but i really recommend watching at least one concert day! A lot of the actors are really good singers and it's just a treat to listen to them sing! Though the first part of the concert is really just them talking before the singing starts and there are no games like for WOH concert, but that should not stop you ^^ There are also some very fun youtube meme videos that will have you laugh your ass off, but these i would only watch after reading the books bc some might spoiler things from there!

Very happy you made it to the end of the drama. I understand what you were saying about opinions though. you need to remember that for many of us we'd already read the novel so were acutely aware of all the things they changed to make the drama. And even though they did an excellent job, there are still strange plot holes because they had to cover parts of the story from the novel that they couldn't explain because of censorship and how they changed the narrative. So the ending was pretty disappointing even though they couldn't be more faithful. However, for the Japanese version they reordered the final scenes so it ends with a very different vibe. The only other thing I'd like to say is that you mentioned getting the graphic novels/manhua - it's great BUT it's still censored. If you want the full explicit version you need to read the novel - everything else is an edited, censored adaption.

They separate at the end and you asked why... Chinese law. Can't show a gay couple, alive, happy and together at the end of a show. The Untamed snuck it in though. Wei Ying at the end... that was not the same day they separated. Time has passed. The grass is a different colour and his robes are different. So, he's returned to Gusu, started playing their song (it's called WuJi/WangXian btw), and we're to assume Lan Zhan showed up. Technically they didn't break the law. We only hear his voice, and see Wei Ying's reaction and smile. We don't actually see them together.

I finally had time to watch the last reaction. OMG thank you so much for this whole journey. It's been a tough year for me, and it's my last year of college, so every time you posted a reaction I was happy because I could listen to it while I was working and feel like I was watching the show again.

Hi, can you react to untamed cast variety? https://youtu.be/oIPjU0te83o?si=UY1FIlizDQdNhzRu https://youtu.be/E9ukx6L8-P8?si=M-ZGggVFIJBSDmuH

Yes. I really enjoy your reactions and hearing your thoughts. Here is another BTS playlist consisting of small videos of the untamed BTS https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7j2Vyi0nbh94_7OXIsGOX1pjAxu1UAgy

I recommend you watch their side movies!! Fatal Journey (focuses on the history of the nie clan and goes into detail about Meng Yao and Mingjue) and The Living Dead (follows Wen Ning and Lan Sizhui and their journey back to their hometown while fighting demons)

Huaisang is actually my favorite character. The first episode and some of the second kinda gives you a set up on how he plots Meng Yao’s demise. The last scene with him and Wuxian was basically them saying that Huaisang can only do so much (i.e. him only doing this bc he want to get revenge for his brother and he doesn’t plan on gaining power) so yeah. I’m glad you liked the series. All the characters are complex so I don’t say I necessarily hate the characters just that they’re all messed up

OMG finally the last episode!! I really enjoyed your reaction and your thoughts throughout the series. I re-watched The Untamed for like 5 times, but when I finished the series, I started to miss all the characters again. If you have some time, I hope you also react to BehindTheScene or Interview videos, you’ll see their interaction and chemistry when they’re not acting or being themselves is very funny and adorable. Here is the link if you’d like to check them out: XiaoZhan & WangYibo Interviews Compilation. https://youtu.be/xWag9bcc19c?si=AsTZhXybFnK1XYlB Yizhan flirting for 20 mins straight. https://youtu.be/EJOm2ykYb-k?si=QYZNcSTM3n-oYWtT

Huaisang really just wanted revenge for his brother, who was killed by Meng Yao. Because it was a 2 fold hurt. He lost his brother and he had to take up a position he never wanted. They go into a bit more detail in the book confirming what he did. I interpreted Wuxian's warning about evil is him kinda telling Huaisang not to keep putting his family in danger for Huaisang's plots. And Huaisang saying he can only do what he can do, was confirming why he involved Wuxian in the first place. He needed help to complete his revenge. But also implying that his purpose wasn't to seize power like Meng Yao. I do recommend watching the first episode & a half again to watch how he set things up. FYI, there's 2 untamed movies you can watch. One of them is about Huaisang and his brother. I disliked the separation at the end as well. Based on the how the characters have been established the entire last part of the series, it's not how it should have gone. They stay together in the book.

There is another part of The Untamed but is mostly the Nie clan..its 20 episodes long ....u can see more of their story...

OMG I can't believe all 50 eps are finished! I loved rewatching this show while watching you react to it. I wanted to ask to please react tp the OSTs (soundtracks) of all characters of the Untamed if you can! They are indeed gorgeous! I also left that suggestion and the list (+ links) to all OSTs in the reaction request form!

girl_writing_

Glad you enjoyed the show I hope you do get around to reading the books. They're long but really good

My interpretation of NHS's actions was that he really just wanted to get revenge and put his brother's soul to rest. His brother was the only family he had and raised him and loved him more than anyone. Getting justice for WWX, who was one of his best friends and also suffered a great injustice was nice, but not his end goal. I think he felt sorry for everyone else who took collaterall damage, but in the end he wasn't going to let JGY live. He wasn't going to let the person who took so much from him, betrayed him, completely changed the trajectory of his life as a meek second son and beloved younger brother-- He wasn't going to let LXC give him mercy. The alternative to JGY dying is, what? LXC takes him back to Gusu and keeps him in the secret house for the rest of his life like his mother was kept? No way. I also think it was a little spiteful, because the perfect, kind, trusting LXC convinced NMJ to give JGY another chance. He was a bystander to NHS's brother being slowly murdered. And I think in the end WWX understands the risks NHS took and what it cost him to be that person for so long, plus the fact that NHS did help him (even with ulterior motives) that he was grateful and respected their friendship enough to let it go. WWX has also been through a lot and was ready to put it all to rest from the moment he was reborn. He wasn't looking for more fruitless conflict.

Also, I have time when I have to ponder Nie Huaisang's feelings about Lan Xichen. Did Huaisang resent him for being blind to Meng Yao's actions all those years? Was Huaisang gratified to have Lan Xichen be the one to kill Meng Yao? Definitely another point of debate! Loved your comment, Topher, that this story is so ripe for discussion and debate.

Kjale

That final flashback with Jiang Cheng totally took me by surprise when I read the novel. To think that's why he had gotten caught--to protect Wei Ying--was shocking.

Kjale

I'm super happy you finished and liked it! Every version of this story has something special in it, but I can't wait for you to read the novel.

J.

Yes! Both are good but "Fatal Journey" is amazing in clarifying Nie brothers story. Would be great to see Topher react to it ;)

J.

Awww I'm glad you enjoyed it, thank you for reacting to it. I did end up rewatching untamed but only about a year later. You do need the gap but then you do know the characters going in so it really changes things. Also the famous Jin Ling's uncle animatic - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrVNMEcPXws

I am glad you loved it !!!😍 I know you were left with questions and I don’t know if anybody has brought it up but beside the character songs their are also two movies on Viki and maybe iQIYI one is called ‘Fatal Journey’ and it takes place before Wei ying revives and it shows you how Huisang went from sweet boy to master mind. The other movie is called ‘The Living Dead’ and it takes place after the untamed and it shows you what Wen Ning and Lan Sizhui get up to after going their separate ways.

Abigail Chavez

Yay you’ve finished the show!! What a journey 🤗

Mo

This was such a journey to go through with you. I can't believe it's over! I love Huaisang so much. The man literally raised the dead and came up with an intricate 25 part plan spanning a decade to avenge his brother's death. That is the energy I want to put out into the world tbh.

Steph K

Yay - now you can read the book and discover how much they had to leave out of the drama.
