There is a mini series from syfy channel that I preferred so much more. Saying that, I did enjoy it.

As you surmised, it did have a great deal to set up for the story, and even though generally faithful to the events of the book it still had to gloss over a lot of detail. In fact, the first movie doesn't even finish the first book. For one example, during Paul's fight with Janis, the Fremen take umbrage at Paul "toying" with Janis, while the book explains that all of Paul's training was using a shield. That caused confusion along with his never having killed before (he was only 15 after all). If the film added all that kind of stuff, it would have been 5 hrs long.

I had forgotten about the 1st one and I was thinking I'd just watch the 2nd one at home but I had a vision to go see it in theater ๐ You must now watch it too... but wait a little?, although not sure how long a gap you should wait, a little, a lot, none?

2024-05-04 00:51:37 +0000 UTCoh, for those waiting for Zendaya... yes, it's like a shock she only appears at the end - but... if you count all the visions as essential to the story then she's there kinda all the time. The personal shield stops fast attacks so they slow down their blow and the blade can slip in. You can see when it's blue it's stopping an attack but it's red when something slips in. It's great they both explained it and at the same time didn't explain it. Good reaction!

2024-05-04 00:45:43 +0000 UTCWoo! I watched this again. When you've watched it maybe 5 times you'll like it even better. I read the book a long time ago. I saw the 2nd movie in the theater (also saw the 1st in theater). After you watch the 2nd movie you'll think the 1st one is fine as-is. ๐ It's a good 2nd movie, it makes the 1st one better. Hopefully that's not a spoiler haha...

I read (and re-read ) these books over the years, and this version of the story is much better than any earlier film or series. There is a great deal of background depth in the books that is hard to incorporate into film, but this version is far more impressive than the "campy" past takes.
