In the intro, Walt makes the bacon into 52, so we know he survives at least 2 years since his cancer diagnosis. season 5 ep 1 is just before Walt's 51st birthday. everything that has happened so far took place in just less of a year! the big question now is what happens between Walt's 51st and 52nd year!

2024-09-12 12:34:09 +0000 UTCAnd starts the greatest season in television history. Vince believed in writing the character's stories as they went along instead of start to finish. They'd back a character into a corner organically and then spend hrs & hrs in the writing room figuring ways they could make an out. At the time of shooting this episode they had no plan for how the M60 gun from the cold open would make it's return to the story. The fact that they can just sprinkle in tools to a scene whether it's objects or a character's lines or even a whole story plot as they go and then come back to them full circle in such a clever & holistic way makes it feel as if it was all planned from the start. Part of the magic of this show.

2024-07-07 12:32:55 +0000 UTCI'm not sure if you have noticed this, but with each season the light inside of their house gets darker and darker. It's an interesting detail to keep track of whenever doing rewatches of this. It's especially noticeable if you compare season 1 and 5, but you can notice small changes in light for all seasons. There are a lot of ways to interpret this, but one of my favorites is how it symbolizes the deteriorating relationship between Walt and Skyler.

Especially when you think of him in Malcolm in the Middle where he basically looks the same but gives such a different performance it's insane they're the same man

So, when this episode opens, it is Walt’s 52nd birthday and he had an ID from another state on the other side of the Country with a new name and his hair has grown out.
