Yut-Lung is such an incredibly compelling character, and I’m very excited to see how you’ll view him come the end of the series. In my mind, he’s a perfect parallel to Ash. Both are very young (16 and 17) and grew up in extremely traumatic environments that forced them to adopt certain personalities and behaviours to survive. These personas are the tools they use to regain control over their lives that were taken by the abusers that made them— they’re just going about it in very different ways. If they were born in slightly different situations, their roles could easily be reversed. I honestly think the only real difference between them is that Ash, despite the abuse he’s endured, has people in his life (primarily Eiji) that genuinely love and support him, despite his reluctance. Yut-Lung, on the other hand, sees all this love and respect others have for Ash and envies it, which is something you’ll see more of as the series progresses. Yut-Lung has no one who genuinely cares about him in his life, with the exception of his mother who was taken from him when he was very young, and—as you previously discussed with Ash—made it very difficult to trust others as he aged. With no one caring for him, and very little trust left to let others in, he adopted this cold-blooded, ruthless, I-don’t-give-a-shit persona to pretend like he’s in control and that the lack of love in his life doesn’t affect him, when in reality, it completely strips him from his sense of self-worth (which will also be explored later in the series). To conclude, there is a lot beneath Yut-Lung’s snake-like surface, even more than he’d like to admit. He pretends his pretty face and obedience are a front for his superior intelligence and schemes, but really, his evil plots are the real front to the vulnerable, abused 16-year-old boy who’s deprived of love. As much as Banana Fish is an action-packed story filled with captivating animation, exhilarating plots, and intriguing mystery, at its core, I believe it’s a survivor story— two very abused teenage boys on separate sides of the battle fighting the same personal demons. How they go about fighting their trauma, I guess you’ll just have to wait and see ;)
