Ah, I really hope you'll like this series. It's basically a sport shonen with poetry. Episode 1 poem is "Now the Flower Blooms", aka "Naniwa Bay". This is the poem that's always read at the beginning of a karuta match, as an introduction to warm up the player to the card reader's voice and rythm. The poem itself is about flowers blooming again in spring after having laid dormant for all winter, and it refers in fact to Emperor Nintoku assuming the throne after three years of interregnum. The poem means to celebrate the new emperor, whose coming will make the reign flourish again. "Naniwa bay" is not actually a karuta card, and the kids we're getting to know in the long flashback from three years ago are not yet the youngsters who'll be the protagonist of this story. Like the poem, this first episode(s) serves as a prologue to the show It start in spring, sakura blooming everywhere, but also Chihaya's passion starting to bloom again after having spent her middle school years in the track club (her three years of interregnum).
