I think whoever wrote the screenplay for the anime may actually be to blame here and not Togashi. I again looked at my English copies of the manga, and not only are there some big omissions from Yusuke and Kurama's conversation that explain his reasoning better, but Yusuke actually says that his idea is to split the cost half and half, and the mirror doesn't really confirm if that is why it worked but it doesn't contradict it either.
