I wanted to do thousands of things this week, Black Friday and etc... but real life happened, huh? Long text ahead 😅 I won't blame you if you can't or don't wanna read 😂
Well, if you remember, last week I told you Lia wasn't feeling very well. I thought she was feeling pain due a fell she had on Sunday, but I was thinking it was too weird because it seemed something really minor to cause that much impact, but since she's an old lady I thought that was the case.
Literally RIGHT after I made the post, she started to have new symptoms and ones I never seemed before in my LIFE 😫 I will try to keep this short and as informative as possible, ok?
Lia developed something called "Vestibular syndrome", which its symptoms consists mainly with a head tilt, her eyes moving involuntary, and losing completely her equilibrium. This happens for a reason that we need to investigate further, but this syndrome occurs due to a problem in her peripheral or central system, in other words, her ears or her brain most likely.
Well, this entire week I went to many different vets to see their opinions, the first one I went said it should be a brain tumor due her old age and told me to see a neurologist when I could. Obviously I went as soon as someone had an appointment available, which happened in the next day, where Lia was feeling a littleeeee bit better. Her nistagmo (eyes moving) were a bit slower than the previous day, all the other symptoms remained.
The neurologist said it should probably be something in her brain, not in her ears, because of a test he made. He told me there was a small chance of the problem being on the peripheral system, something like internal otitis or idiopathic geriatric vestibular syndrome, but he was thinking it should be more of a tumor or even meningitis. So he told me I should get Lia to do a MRI or a head tomography during the next weeks. Well, I don't need to tell you this was probably when of the hardest days I've ever had in my life, I guess you already assumed that ☹️
Anyways, I was not happy with this diagnosis because something inside me was telling me it IS on the peripheral system, if it's just me trying to believe in the less serious scenario, I don't know. But on the next day I went to see a different doctor. She saw my sister's boyfriend's cat that had this syndrome as well, due an otitis. So I went there.
She told me that she didn't think Lia's reflexes were so bad as to be compromised by the central system, as the neurologist had said. So, before doing something like MRI or tomography that requires sedation / anesthesia, she told me I could give her meds to internal otitis as well, together with the anti inflammatory and medicine for dizziness/labyrinthitis that the neurologist prescribed. And if Lia gets better and DOESN'T come back with the symptoms, that we could discard the possibility of being on the central system.
I didn't want to do the MRI or tomography, even if all of her blood tests, ultrasound, heart tests, everything is normal. But still, anesthesia is always a risk to any living thing on this planet 🥺 So I opted of trying this treatment first.
Now, IF she gets better now, and after the meds are done she gets worse again, well, then these ain't good news. In this case I should be doing the test when possible, BUT I'm crossing my fingers it's not her case.
So, if you read this far, if you like me and Lia and believe in something, keep her in your thoughts ❤️ Lia is a very healthy old dog, but it's still an old dog. Everything happened very sudden, so yes, I was devastated 😫 She's now 70% better. Only with head tilt, nistagmo is fully gone and her equilibrium is MUCH better. Wish us good luck ❤️
I took a while to write this honestly because I had no idea how to write any of this. It was new information for me even in my language. And I was very miserable as well. 😓
(sorry for the English mistakes)
I guess you already assumed by now, but November rewards will be delayed some days. I'll keep you updated when I have more news!!
