So, I've recently come back to the Patreon with the intention of giving it a more serious go. That started with uploading a lot of chapters of an urban fantasy novel that is a work in progress for me. I've been posting these chapters over on Royalroad as well, mostly to see if they'd get any traction. Much to my delight, they have generated some modest traction if the chapter view numbers are to be believed.
Recently, I've also decided to try my hand at writing a Xianxia-inspired cultivation fantasy novel. Chances are that one of two things just happened. Option one is that read that you read "...Xianxia-inspried cultivation fantasy novel" and gave a sage nod. Option two is that you read that bit and said, "Xianxia? Cultivation? What the hell kind of drugs is Eric taking?"
If you're in the second camp, hold tight for a bit. I'll probably write a blog post explaining all of that in more detail in the next few days. What this means for my presence here on Patreon is that my tiers are going to change a bit. I originally intended to use Patreon as a spur to write some short fiction, but I'm clearly in full-on novel writing mode for the foreseeable future. I'm going to lean into that and make the tiers reflect that new mindset.
As such, rather than providing occasional short fiction on a wholly unpredictable schedule, I'm going to be offering access to preview chapters of my ongoing Royalroad novels. I haven't worked out the exact tiers, yet, but the $5 will probably get you something like access to one early chapter. The $10 tier will get you access to two early chapters. Here's the good news. Since I'm currently working on two completely different novels, you'll probably get to do some double-dipping and see early chapters from both books.
My current plan is something along the lines of posting two chapters of Jericho Lott and three chapters of Unintended Cultivator (the Xianxia-inspired novel) each week on Royalroad. This week is something of a hash, because I still need to write enough chapters that I'm working at least a full week in advance and, ideally, I'll end up working two weeks in advance. The logistics are still a bit hazy for me, but that the general idea. The takeaway here is that you'll get some free chapters to read as a teaser of sorts.
I'll also be offering other perks at different levels. For example, people in the higher-paying tiers will probably get to vote in polls that may affect the direction of the books or at least give me some feedback while change is still possible. You may also get to vote on things like cover art.
For those tagging along in the non-paying ranks or the $1 tier, there will be some things you get to participate in as well. You'll still get to see the chapters when they go live for everyone. Plus, I'll be making more of an effort to write posts that catalog my process, thoughts on writing, and thoughts on publishing in general. You may even get a free short story here and there.
Once I get everything pinned down to my satisfaction, though, the tiers will change. You have been warned.
