Regarding the Comments Section

I realize that I never set out a formal policy about the comments section, but I feel like I need to set out at least a few guidelines about what is and isn't acceptable.

Disagreeing about what I wrote, what it means, or whether it works: acceptable.

The same pretty much applies to any artwork I have commissioned.

Making personal comments about other commenters or directing profanity at other commenters: Not acceptable.

Other generally unacceptable comments include comments including any kind of discriminatory language regarding other people's race, sex, religion, sexual preferences, country of origin, etc.

Basically, I'm asking that everyone keep the discussions civil and largely profanity free so that everyone can participate. Because, honestly, I'd much rather spend my time writing chapters for you guys than policing the comments section.

Update: This page is a politics-free zone. Comments that exist solely to promote a political agenda will get you automatically and permanently blocked from this page.

Comments

To be fair, my publisher is a for-profit venture. I don't realistically expect that the majority of the people who are signed up to my Patreon page or who are reading on Royal Road to buy the books, ebooks, audiobooks, or even to read the books on Kindle Unlimited. It's nice when they do, but I don't expect it. After all, Patreon subscribers are already paying me. I suspect that a large percentage of Royal Road readers are reading there because they don't have money to spend on books. Hell, that's how I found the website a couple years ago when my poverty stat was high. However, sales of things like paperbacks, ebooks and audiobooks are the ways that my publisher stays in business. So, on those grounds, I can't really complain if they don't want to promote things that are likely to actively cost them money. As for grammar/punctuation edit suggestions, I haven't actively banned them. With that in mind, there are already a lot of enthusiastic people on here who make those suggestions. I'd suggest checking the comments to make sure that someone hasn't beaten you to the punch with a proofreading suggestion. I'll also note that the chapters you see on here are pure first drafts. I literally post them within a couple minutes of finishing them. So, expect errors. Beyond that, these books go through a multistage process of professional copyediting and proofreading before they go off to Amazon. So, now you know.

Hello! New here, and just wanted to offer a suggestion and a question. Suggestion: I found books 1 and 2 on Amazon and loved them! I was eagerly awaiting book 3 when I noticed a recommendation for your book on Royal Road, where I'm a member. I double checked your books, and sure enough, you don't mention or link either Royal Road or your Patreon! You might want to consider doing that, as that's how I usually end up following authors on Patreon. Question: how do you feel about suggesting grammar/punctuation edits?

Jake Conway

Hey it's not big deal, generally this type of verbal fights happen on discord and got resolved quickly. We should not have done it on patreon as it escalated an author had to intervene and u should not stop commenting for it. We should just try to make it polite.

Proof that aussies dont have to swear, check out this cartoon of our cultured mining industry.

Fucka duck mate, you give us cultured aussies a bad name, now don't mention pooftas, c@nts, buggers and good bastards.

HenryMorgan

Australian, eh? Yeah, I can see how that might be a bit of ask there. Just try not to let it get too out of hand.

Eric Dontigney

Nah bruv keep on commenting I liked reading your views and everyone’s else’s it’s what makes the story more enjoyable to be able to see it how others view it even if some don’t agree it’s all love

Inner peace

I tend to just like the comments I agree with and wish I could downvote the ones I don't. Keeps things from going anywhere unproductive.

Chris Fox

So we get one fuck per comment. Can do.

Chris Fox

This was precipitated by me, I became an asshole, and asked Eric if I was too much of an asshole. Turns out I was, in fact too much of an asshole. I got called an 'edgelord' and having looked it up I can confirm that is what I was doing based on my views that the other commenter was upset over what I found to be standard cultivation behaviour. He makes a valid point that a lot of cultivation is based on enlightenment and thinking on the Dao, but the jianghu is not a kind place and if someone losing an arm is upsetting then when sects interfere down the line and more violent reactions will need to occur to save face... I felt like I was trying to prepare the commenter for that. Just maybe not in the most constructive of ways. But I digress, I will refrain from posting my views here in the future and apologize for my argumentative behavior.

The Dude

But I'm Australian. We can't talk without swearing.

John O'Connor

Mostly, the latter. As for the use of profanity in comments, I'm not demanding that people drop it completely. Just try stray closer to a rated-PG-13 level, rather than a rated-R level.

Eric Dontigney

As far as profanity, trying to keep it squeaky clean or just nobody cursing other commenters out?

Chris Fox

Will do Mr. Author man. Love the story btw. Hope that headace clears and you enjoy your week
