The hostages are top ranking officer's wives.

The Empire's leader did not pay the rebel because they don't think they worth anything, so they detonated the bomb on time. The bomb was set between heavy armor plate forming explosive channel that will only severe the bodies in half.
The blast torn through their flesh splattering guts and bits of skin and bones behind. Some wombs were able to protect the fetus from the blow and they survived intact.
Two of the girl gone instantly, then 4 of them somehow tough enough to survived the blast, only to bled out soon after. The rebel show their ruthlessness to the world by showing them the girls their fetuses. Before taking them away and not letting them together for the last time.
