Ahhhh I wish we could've gotten a hint of that monologue in the anime it would've gave me goosebumps

2023-09-25 15:58:02 +0000 UTCWhile Kirito was charging up his attack there was actually a page long monologue about Kirito coming to terms with the "Black Swordsman" persona he himself despises. He feels like everyone is seeming him as that hero and he can't live up to the facade that he created back in Aincrad to protect himself. Accepting it as part of himself was necessary for him to be able to launch this kind of attack. What he used was a sword skill called "Vorpal Strike" at onehanded sword thrust skill with a reach and power comparable to a two handed spear. It was basically his favorite skill back in Aincrad, to the point that it became something of his trademark. (That's why back in GGO Xaxa/Death Gun remarks how "the old him would be embarrassed to see that weak Vorpal Strike") Vorpal Strike usually only has a reach of about twice the blade length but as you saw he hit a target that was easily more than 10 blade length away, for that to work Incarnation was needed. For that Incarnation he needed a strong mental image that doesn't leave any room for doubt in his heart and that "Black Swordsman" persona is the only mental image that could do that but of that he has to completely accept it. That also why he was back in his Aincrad Drip, the Incarnation didn't just overwrite the reach of his blade but also the clothes he was wearing (in the novel Eugeo also remarks how his hair seems to have grown a bit for that one moment)
