Full Length | Game of Thrones 3x5 Reaction

Kissed by Fire!! This is a great episode with some highs and lows but i'm riding hard for the love that is blooming and scared of the negative tension that is bubbling up quickly throughout the world.

Not gonna lie this is probably the best write up about Jaime I've seen and it perfectly explains all the reasons why he's my favourite character in the series.

You touched on some important points in the discussion at the end. I agree with another comment. We don't know if Jamie was that way before he killed the king. Imagine if everyone calls you oathbreaker, man without honor, ... maybe you can't help but become cynical. Maybe at first you fight it, but you slowly understand that you can't fight such a overwhelming reputation.

On the topic of Kingslaying, I think it's worth mentioning that sworn oaths are considered sacred in this world. If you swear to do something but then break your word, then you are the lowest of the low. In a society where the legal system is very informal and society functions on an honor system, your word is everything. It's currency and credit and contract and sacrement. Your word, your honor, is the difference between a town living through winter or starving to death because the promised grain never arrived when the person that gave his word said it would. If you don't have your word or honor, then you are essentially on par with murderers. When Jaime joined the Kingsguard, he swore a sacred oath before Gods and Men to protect the King. It doesn't matter if the King has a bad reputation or makes decisions he disagrees with, he swore to the seven gods he will protect the king with his very life. Barristan Selmy spoke in this episode about how Robert wasn't a good King, nor was The Mad King. He didn't believe in either of them, but he still protected them with his life because that was his sworn vow. He literally fought for The Mad King during the rebellion even though he recognized the Mad King had become a tyrant. Barristan would rather die than break his oath. When Jaime killed the King he swore to protect, he lost all honor and respect in the eyes of all, regardless of any reason he could have given to explain why. The only reason he wasn't executed or sent to the Wall for the Kingslaying was because Tywin was his father and Robert needed Tywin to secure his Throne. And that only made people despise him more, as it looked like he suffered no consequences for his dishonor. But from that day on, he went from being Ser Jaime, the youngest man to ever become a Kingsguard, to the Kingslayer, the Oathbreaker, the Man without honor. It's interesting to note that Jaime was still a teenager when he killed The Mad King. From his POV, he performed his greatest deed by stopping the King from killing half a million people. The kind of heroism Knights dream about, the kind of bravery that usually gets celebrated in songs and poems. But as he said in this episode, all it took was one look from Ned to realize he was actually being judged guilty the moment Ned set eyes on him, and that no one would ever see his sinful Kingslaying as heroic. His great deed would only grant him infamy. From Neds POV, when he came into the Throne Room and saw the dead King laying in front of Jaime, all he saw was Tywin Lannisters son putting the final touches on Tywin's sacking of the city. All he saw was an oathbreaker, a man that would kill the King he was sworn to protect by stabbing him in the back. All he saw was the treachery and dishonor of the Lannisters, securing Robert's Throne in the most shameful way possible. You made an interesting point where you said Jaime's personality plays into why people despise him. But I think it's an open question of what came first, the hatable personality or the people despising him.
