What seems like a "set up" episode adds more to the mystery, more to Kaji's sketchiness, more to Shinji and Asuka's relationship, and more to this world where 8th grade field trips go scuba diving and 14-year-old saviors dive into magma to capture "angel eggs." What a journey we're on so far, right?
I definitely feel sorry for Shinji, and Asuka too, dealing with puberty in this post-apocalyptic world. I feel this episode is such a set up for what's to come...we shall see, eh?

Japanese culture is known for adopting aspects of other cultures into their own, and modifying them to suit Japanese culture/society. Even their writing system (kanji) is adopted from China.
