Vinland Saga: Episode 5 FULL LENGTH Reaction!

**HEADPHONE WARNING**

This series has REALLY hit the ground running and despite being a little nervous with how the show would handle Thorfinn's character post-losing Thors, I couldn't be happier with the development he's getting! The struggles of a six-year-old, y'all! I have to keep reminding myself this is a LITERAL child going through all this.

And I LOVE that we're getting more into Bjorn and Askeladd's characters and insight into the grieving process for Ylva and Helga...it's hard to focus on the grief if you're busy...and this series is getting BUSY. I'm so excited for what's to come!

Vinland Saga: Episode 5 FULL LENGTH Reaction!

Yes, it’s understandable that Thors wanted to shelter Thorfinn and give him a “peaceful” life, and yet here he is learning the Viking’s way of life…at such an impressionable age, too. I do love how intriguing Askeladd is in this, along with the Vikings! I definitely think Thorfinn from the start has wanted to deny Thor’s ideals about “no enemies” because it was too complicated for him to comprehend as a 6-year-old, but being “grave” and “not running” away and as you said, justifying his aggression towards Askeladd makes so much sense. Oohhh, that’s a neat note about Askeladd as well! That he could be more nihilistic and fatalist – hmmm…which does beg the question of what getting paid will lead him to if he doesn’t care about the glory or views death as inevitable, but then, that’s the fun of his character – trying to figure him out! I’ll be excited to see what else we learn about him as we go into this series more! That is a really good point about Bjorn – having watched the next episode, I can say that we see what you were talking about in action with Thorfinn’s character and what he goes through, but yeah – I like that Thors as a paragon of pacifism is fine…if you’re not in the Viking world. From Bjorn’s point of view, and the Vikings, if they lived by Thors ideals, they’d be dead. And no worries – y’all have seen how long I ramble! This episode and the next REALLY have gotten me on board with the series and made me really want to dive more into it! I appreciate all the kind words and comment – I feel this series is going to be one to leave an impact! :)

Oh yeah, I agree -- I REALLY got on board with Askeladd's character at this point, to find out more about him and see how his dynamic with Thorfinn would develop! Thank you for the kind words and comment! I'm REALLY excited now to get into this series!

Yeah honestly this episode was probably the one that made me decide that from what I had seen so far, I wasn't really going to hate Askeladd's character... Like, it was clear that we would get so much more about him, and we also start to see his dynamic with Thorfinn and look forward to however their relationship may develop... Anyways, I'm excited for the rest of the series!

I think this ep was a solid way of showing sheltered Thorfin part of the vikings life , just pillaging villages. And while Askelad is extremely interesting character , he and his crew are not good guys and the show re-establishes that via that small sequence through Thorfins POV . Also its interesting how Thorfin uses his fathers ideals as an excuse to challenge Askelad. All the teachings about having no enemies , or that its not okay to hurt anyone are discarded but the thing about proper duel, about not having a cowards way during the fight is the only thing that matters. In a way Thorfin processing Thors teachings thats justifing his own agression and violence towards Askelad . Tho im pretty sure hes not aware of that , considering how young Thorfin is. Also I completely agree with you that Askelad did not want to let Floki have the satisfaction of knowing final moments of Thors and its def probably the right interpretation. But watching it today it dawned upon me , that maybe it could be a commentary on Askelads more nihilistic /fatalistic approach to lifestyle/mindset. Death is invevitable and any death is just a death , theres no glory in dying, all things come to an end and its just way of life in that time period. All Askelad cares is about getting paid as far as we know. ( I might be over thinking it a bit lol) Lastly I wanna kinda agree with Bjorn in a way. Thors was a great man, he held his ideals no matter the cost. He was the paragon of pacifism in the little that we saw and its admirable no matter the context. Any life is important . But because of that he was naive in a way, he was not realistic how his pacifism might impact the closest to him. What kind of consequences might be after hes gone . Im just playing devils advocate , but i think it would be interesting to critique Thors ideals in a realistic context and have some meta commentary. Ideals are nice and all but people need to live , especiallly back then. Sorry for my long tangents lol, its just Vinland Saga as a series really happened at the right time and place in my life. Its not popular in reactor/youtube space and even if people start watching it , they dont ruminate on it as you haha. Which I really appreciate . And its not just Vinland, all the series you do theres always a lot of stuff you bring up and expound on that i feel does every shows justice
