Neon Genesis Evangelion: Episode 14 FULL LENGTH Reaction!

*MIND BOGGLING HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

What I assumed at first would be a stylized recap episode ended up being a mind-boggling set up episode full of characters with secrets and revelations (pun intended) about the Angels and what we know so far -- and we the audience can only speculate who knows what and what information will become relevant in the episodes to come!

Things are getting INTERESTING, though. Our "Simon Says" committee thinks this so-called "Seele's Script" is being followed, but Gendo and Fuyu-chan have "rewrote" their own narrative! Meanwhile, Akagi has secrets of her own, and Asuka is trying to figure out why Rei is so special...as are we, Asuka. As are we.

Ohh! Thank you so much for the insight and explanation in this comment -- that does make a lot of sense and does help explain why Shinji turns to his headphones to drown out or create a single focus. I really appreciate that insight! :)

Just a quick comment about Shinji's noise sensitivity. As a neurodiverse person I share this trait, but it isn't what most people associate with "noise sensitivity" it is more nuanced than that. There are particular types of noise that are difficult for me to deal with. Social noise is the number one for me, when multiple conversations are happening in the same room along with music is especially anxiety inducing. Putting on headphones and drowning all of that out with one single focus is an excellent escape. The sensation is hard to describe, but I think at the core is that my brain feels like it is hard wired to -need- to process and understand all the input it is being given, regardless of if it is aimed at me. I could only commiserate with Shinji in the earlier episode where he hears the crickets and then the sounds of the city, and then the people, and then he covers his ears and runs into the countryside where the only sounds are wind and nature. This is where I think we see him most at peace (this is me locked in my witches tower with my computer and my dog :D ).

Just to be clear, it was not budget, that is a myth. Evangelion didn't have any lower of a budget than any other TV show of the time. The issue was with Gainax not having done a TV show of this scope and ambition before, and thus they fell behind schedule.

The first half recap was due to budget problems the show was having, but I think the second half really makes up for it! I love Rei’s strange poem, the part where she compares the mountains and sky I always interpreted as the mountains symbolizing earth, the material world, that which you can see and that which changes over time. And the sky to represent heaven, the spiritual and immaterial, that which you cannot see. Her line about the flowers being “so many of the same…so many unneeded ” is foreshadowing so keep it in mind. :) Rei also reiterated her hatred of the Colour red (also keep in mind that Asuka is associated with red) and her earlier Statement of “I don’t like meat” becomes a bit more interesting than a simple declaration of vegetarianism. The “woman who never bleeds” line is an unusual part of the poem and I’ve read several theories as to what this could mean, but your MAGI interpretation was really excellent! The only thing that I think could hamper this theory is that the pilots Likely do not know of the MAGI’s existence. The “ Entry plug, a throne for a soul” is another import line to keep in mind for the future. The first half of her poem is an interesting exploration of shinji’s emotions as see through Rei’s eyes set to images of shinji’s memories. Rei seems to be very in tune with Shinji’s emotional state, which Akagi comments on her synch-rate being identical in both EVAs. The second half of her poem is more introspective and sees her try to rationalize her own existence and figure out “who am I?” Her first attempt to answer her own question “who is this? This is me.” Essentially “I think, there for I am” she is unsatisfied with this and her next answer is “I am myself. This object is me.” Focusing on her physical state to ground her rather than her unstable mental state, which backfired as she immediately starts to dissociate; “very strange i feel as if my body is melting. I can no longer see myself. My shape is fading.” She then try’s to find her sense of self in the self that is perceived by the others around her and the connections (however few) that she had made. I believe She lists them in order of “importance” to her with shinji first, then Misato, Akagi, her classmates, “unit two’s pilot”, then strangely last is Gendo who is symbolized only by his broken glasses as opposed to the smiling image of him she had previously idealized. It’s so intriguing the development between Rei and Gendo that is shown without a single interaction, but it’s clear that he went from a figure that she adored to someone she doesn’t trust and isn’t sure of anymore. The scene at the end where she is transporting the Lance of Longinus (named after the spear the pierced the side of Jesus in the bible) only makes you wonder just how Rei is involved in Gendo’s “script”. The statement by Misato that Asuka cannot connect with anyone else was on display in episode 9 where she struggles to synchronize with Shinji, and the episodes after the fact if you pay attention to her character she is as alone if not more alone than Shinji. Her relationship with her classmates seem superficial at best, she hasn’t really connected with Shinji, Misato, and especially not Rei, and we have no idea about her parents. She really puts up a lot of walls with her aggressive attitude but at the same time seeks a lot of attention and approval from those around her, and even makes the occasional attempt to reach out to Shinji which only seems to have driven him away and frustrated Asuka, and rather inappropriately tried to connect with Kaji who cannot reciprocate her feelings in the way that she wants. The scene where Akagi speculates that unit 00 was trying to kill her is another big bombshell moment that I love from this episode:) can’t wait for episode 15, this is where the show really gets interesting! Hope you enjoy!
