But he's also the Thirteenth Angel. So...bait and switch?
This episode's first half was some of the most subtly foreboding and ominous atmosphere I've watched in a series -- leading to the second half, which goes off the rails, as Shinji is faced with the choice to kill, chooses NOT to, and then is forced to stand by and watch as his father takes the reigns in all its gory, blood-red resolution.
I haven't been left this emotionally battered watching a show in a while...and this is ONLY the START of the final act to this series? Oh no.

2022-07-18 00:10:51 +0000 UTCI remember this being a turning point in the series for me as an audience member when I was younger. There's a reason that of the four figurines I have from Evangelion unit 03 was one of the first I purchased. (the others are the first angel, unit 02, and one that hasn't appeared yet). Incidentally the unit 03 figurine is one of the more customizable that I own from back when I collected them, you can swap out it's limbs to move it from a more natural human pose to the more animal stance it takes while strangling unit 01.
