Neon Genesis Evangelion: Episode 21 DIRECTOR'S CUT FULL LENGTH Reaction!

**MIND-BLOWING HEADPHONE WARNINGS**

We not only get 29 minutes of this Director's Cut, but an episode full of FINALLY questions ANSWERED, but entirely new ones brought up!

An episode of lore, backstory on our mysterious couple of Gendo and Yui - as well as Fuyu-chan and Ritsuko's mother - and a series of betrayals, love, lies, and hatred spanning over 15 years...the motivations of our characters and the "crosses they bear" is put on display in this episode...and there are still nagging questions about it all under the surface. And I'm not sure I'm ready for the answers.

That little blue angel! Hahaha, and Akagi's mom and Gendo...ooooh....such twists! I LOVED this episode giving us lore and all the little insights with these side characters we've been following up until now. I wondered if Shinji was thinking Misato's sadness was related to Kaji -- I mean, she is REALLY upset -- or if the tragedy is he just runs away without even finding out or trying to. :( But interesting about Gendo's name! Making notes!! :D Thanks for the info and comment!

A lot of backstory in this episode! I loved your reaction to Akagi’s mom and Gendo haha. I’m happy you noticed the little “blue Angel” on the wedding invite aswell i almost thought you where going to miss it. The majority of this episode has really interesting lore, we finally meet Shinji’s mom, young fuyutsuki and Gendo, lil Rei, and a very tragic detail to Misato’s past. But what I really love about this episode is that final sequence where Misato listens to Kaji’s final message to her and breaks down in tears. That scene is so emotional, even more so when you consider that Shinji has become very withdrawn since he was absorbed into the EVA, he is back to listening to his Walkman again and “runs away” from comforting Misato which previously they have done for each other. I do think that it’s important to note that Shinji likely has no idea that Misato is grieving Kaji, and if he knew I believe he would have approached her. Also Rokubungi (Gendo’s original surname) means “Sextant” in Japanese.

HOLY smokes! I love this comment — I hadn’t thought of it that way, but you bring up such a great parallel here about Shinji and how he handles the inability he feels to console his father or Misato after losing someone that is or could be their significant other. I didn’t hate Shinji for not comforting Misato, but I was disappointed, too. Misato definitely could have used Shinji offering her a hug or shoulder to cry on…the “crosses to bear” connection, though; DEFINITELY talking about this in a future discussion! Thank you!

"Right then, all I could do was run away from Misato. There was nothing I could do or say. I was a child." I don't hate Shinji like some viewers do, but this is the one moment so far that really makes want to shake him and tell him to do better. Obviously there's nothing he can do to fix Kaji dying, but surely it would do some good for Shinji and Misato to commiserate a little. But when I noticed Misato making her arms into a cross as she cries, I started to see parallels with Gendo, the other character whose lover dies and is left to carry a (visually suggested) cross this episode. And I wonder if Shinji is talking in some roundabout/thematic way about his relationship with/abandonment by Gendo after Yui died/"disappeared". Like Shinji is carrying forward a feeling of helplessness from his inability to console his father, even though he was a literal baby at the time. After all, the English title is "He was aware that he was STILL a child".
