Neon Genesis Evangelion: Episode 25 FULL LENGTH Reaction!

I had a lot of expectations for the penultimate episode of this series...and this episode went against ALL OF THEM.
Literally a "one act" play in Shinji's mind, Shinji goes through his relationships with everyone close to him, and everyone close to him has some self-realizations of their own, as Gendo's big plan is revealed, and our protagonists are left in an overwhelming pit of despair as we go into the finale...ah, well, "All the world's a stage, eh?"

THANK YOU for the "reaction formation" example and definition -- that was driving me crazy! ^^ And thank you for the kind words and comment; I loved this arthouse look into Shinji's psyche and I can see how the "Shinji in a chair" moment has become iconic. This episode was so good, and now it's just 26 and EOE...well, until the Rebuilds. And the other media. Haha!!

2022-09-08 17:44:47 +0000 UTCI loved this analysis! EVA really goes full arthouse in this episode and we get so much good introspection from our characters, plus the iconic Shinji in a chair. The term that you where looking for in this episode by the way was “reaction formation” it is a defence mechanism that was written about by Anna Freaud, and applies to a few of our characters very well. Reaction formations occur when the individual experiences an unwanted or anxiety inducing impulse, emotion or desire. The unconscious will enact the defence mechanism by replacing the unwanted desire or emotion with its opposite, often displayed in an exaggerated or showy fashion. The classic example of this would be a child who bullies someone that they secretly have a crush on. We can see this reaction formation displayed most obviously with Asuka, but in this episode Misato very clearly uses this defence mechanism.

I can totally see this being the case, and I almost hope that he contradicts sometimes on purpose...just to rile the fandom up. ;)

2022-09-02 15:22:53 +0000 UTCOooh, I think I'll end up having some things in between EOE and the Rebuilds (that are NGE related, like the Dating Sim, the EP 24 script readings) and I'll add the Drama CD to it because that sounds like a lot of fun! I'm definitely going to take note of Blue Blazes and The Big Turnip -- I think when I'm totally finished with NGE's anime content, I want to do a Recap video (like I've done for AOT) and it would be cool to watch those two pieces to get some more insight into Anno to talk about him for it. Thank you for sharing those pieces, too! :)

2022-09-02 13:35:55 +0000 UTCIf we’re recommending Eva related stuff you might be interested, Eva had a CD Drama thing they made called ‘After the End’; it’s only like half an hour long and it might be something you enjoy in between EoE and the Rebuilds. There’s also a charming video by Anno’s wife called ‘The Big Turnip’ made to celebrate Studio Khara’s 10th anniversary about Anno’s life long struggles, it’s based on a show called ‘Insufficient Direction’ of 5 minute shorts about the relationship between Anno & his Wife. Finally there’s ‘Blue Blazes’ a semi biographical story about an art student who happened to be classmates with the future Gainax staff and other Anime legends; Hideaki Anno plays the role of villain/rival and it’s hilarious. I realize some of these are sort of obscure, not very good for reactions or not very Eva related but I think they’re interesting just in case you might want to check them out.
