Oh, y'all -- I KNOW I'm just at the tip of the iceberg when it comes to connections and revelations in this story, but the connections back to Volume 1 were SENDING me! I had to re-watch the OVA after reading these chapters and I have a feeling I'll be going back to that first season a LOT as I read this volume!
PLEASE no spoilers, hints, or clues, but you ALL, I am LOVING this story and how MXTX is a genius in connecting all the threads together -- I cannot WAIT to see what's in store! I was so giddy this reaction!

Whatever 90s/00s chick flick, Xie Lian is a sorority girl! Thanks for the birthday wishes! Feels like another present that my birthday fell on Danmei Monday 😊

And hahahahaha, given them Mappa's budget and we DEFINITELY won't be able to have that season air -- they'll sexify HC beyond all belief! OMG -- no, the "I only wear white" is so Bring It On/Legally Blonde! I just need Ruoye as a little dog in a purse XL packs around, hahaha! But no, HC and XL as cheerleaders would be AMAZING! XL is a valley girl, he can't help it! It goes with QR's Super Sweet 16 motif! Dang it, global warming!! But also, YES, MXTX is so good to make such imagery and the contrast in these chapters -- it's crazy! And oooommmmmmg, the fact that NOW we're getting the shrine and HC inheriting the umbrella -- CUE FANGIRLING INDEED! HC's backstory so far is SO DAMN SAD, and we're just getting started, I feel. UGH. No wonder XL's words hit him SO hard! And yes, of ALL people for XL to break the rules to -- it was Hong Hong-er. OMG. Thank you for the kind words and comment! 2022-12-18 23:45:57 +0000 UTCThe water on the cover of this volume are the tears of the readers, right?! ALREADY, we have so much sadness and tragedy in these chapters...and it's just the BEGINNING! It's SO fascinating to see how "limited" the gods and heavenly officials actually are and that they aren't all-powerful as the beginning of the story leads you to possibly think. They remind me more of a "genie" like from Aladdin -- except they have more than an "itty bitty living space," haha! And that's a great point! XL has grown up being great at anything he's done and for the first time, he's limited. It's very hard for XL and tragic for us to watch with him. T-T Thanks for the comment!

And yesssss, it's slowly sinking in that the white calamity is really the nail in the coffin, isn't it? Just not a good thing to throw on top of a kingdom already on the downward spiral. :( That's a good point about the earth master and "limitations," as well! Wow, that's a great note about the "3 idiots of Xianle" hahaha - but yeah, that FX and MQ have values that the HR deems fine while XL is the one booted is...telling. LOVE the Shinobu reference -- I could SO see the comparison when XL lands on the temple shrine and now I have that in my head, hahaha! But seriously, the ultimate revenge of HC is that he grew up to be the most handsome ghost king with these glorious butterflies surrounding him. Forget a bloody revenge -- a beautiful one is better! <3 Thanks for the comment!

It was included in the trailer and the censors went "this is too hot for Chinese TV!" 🤣 Give them Mappa's budget and I reckon the donghua could really pull off the eternal lanterns scene 😂 The "I only wear white" gives me such 90s/00s chick flick vibes. Very Bring It On-esque for the comeback...even more so with the way you said it in your discussion part of the video. And now I'm imagining the Xian Le trio and Hua Cheng as cheerleaders 🤦🏻♀️ It was global warming that led Xian Le to its downfall 😂 In all seriousness, the river is just like the one cup metaphor. A single river won't hold enough water for all the people, even less so if the river levels are lower than usual as would typically be the case with such scorching temperatures. Mo Xiang Tong Xiu paints such a vivid picture. Both in terms of beauty (with the lanterns) and in terms of horror (the starving people of Xian Le). I giggled at the way you paused when you realised what shrine Xie Lian was at. Hua Cheng/San Lang/Hong Hong: *enters* Readers: *fangirl/boy screams* Now you know why that line by San Lang is one of my favourites. He's always been Xie Lian's most sincere devotee. Feel like Mo Xiang Tong Xiu's editor might have asked her "How much do you want your readers to suffer as they read about Hong Hong-er?" and she just replied "Yes!" Too much heartache!!! 😭 Just want to reach through the pages and hug this precious teenager. Xie Lian didn't break the rules to speak with Qi Rong nor his parents...but he can't hold back from answering Hong Hong-er 🥺 The silent scream said it all! 🤣 But right there with you. These chapters really pull on your heartstrings.

2022-12-13 22:29:22 +0000 UTCreading this chapter again with you, in addition to looking at the picture again, I realised that Hong's little tacky doll-like clay god statue sort of reminds me of the budaoweng doll that Hua Cheng turned Lang Qianqiu into when they were going to Qi Rong's lair. I think they're still a little different but I'm really just amused now at the thought of Hua Cheng turning these Crown Prince deities into these smiley little dolls haha. It's so cute!! Love the reaction and analysis as per usual. I don't like contributing crazy amounts of insight because I'm way too nervous of accidentally spoiling, but watching these every week really provides my dose of TGCF!!

2022-12-13 14:06:34 +0000 UTCVolume 3 certainly starts off with an emotional bang; between Yong’an, Lang Ying and his son, Xie Lian’s reality check, seeing the King and Queen of Xian Le and then our dear little Hua Cheng in the temple begging for a reason to live. I’m not ashamed to say my physical copy of this book is stained by more than a couple of tears. I feel like it gives a lot of perspective to the actions and more removed stance of the other heavenly officials when it comes to mortal matters the more we learn about how limited they actually are in terms of what they can do. The idea of “gods” usually brings to mind all powerful and all knowing beings but these heavenly officials have more limitations then we assume and I think than the mortals that worship them assume, after all they were all human too. It’s another thing that comes with Xie Lian’s lack of experience and his early ascension… he also didn’t foresee himself or at least think of himself being limited, not only by the rules of the heavens but also his by own power which he has never had any reason to doubt before now. As his mother said “that child is good at everything,” and how do you deal with not being good at something when previously you’ve been good at everything? How agonising must it be to want so desperately to help and still be powerless to do so even after attaining godhood?

This part is actually a bit hinted in manhua during the night talk of hualian after they went back from banyue pass, and you got that amazing image of XL in his full glory thanking Hong for the flower. OOF the Xian Le kingdom is not doing great, actually they are struggling to keep up...and everyone can see that this is not going to end well. I'd say that as far as we see, even if there isn't a white calamity, this drought is more than enough to terminate the country. The king has already done what he can do and even our beloved crown prince cannot pull out some rain clouds from void as a martial god. As for the rain master who's yet to be presented, we aren't sure if they are willing to help XL, and even if they are being helpful, will they have this kind of ability to do so? We've already met wind master and earth master, and both of them seem uncapable of influencing their representing element in that large quantity. I mean, earth master was held captive by HC underground and he cannot even dig a tunnel out for himself despite being surrounded by earth. The 3 idiots of Xian Le all had different preferences regarding mortals, and I'd say the preference of FX ('the mortals will figure it out themselves, let's just wait') and MQ ('some prayers are more important than others and the answering order needs to be settled') is closer to what we see in the heavenly court, no wonder they are both doing well up there while XL ('I can save everybody, and everybody is worth saving') is kicked out. Little hong was called ugly as human and only grow up to be this most handsome ghost king surrounded by butterflies......guess they have a beauty salon hidden somewhere in mount Tong Lu along with a insect breeding base? Just joking LOL. And about that description "descending lightly like a butterfly" what I portrait in my head is Kochou Shinobu from Demon Slayer, that moment where she come down to get to Zenitsu on the roof top in the spider mountain.
