I didn't know the feral monster I'd become with these chapters, but MAN -- MXTX crafts an insanely complex, HEARTWRENCHING story with these characters, and things keep getting more complicated for our cinnamon bun deity, who makes some DECISIONS and is faced with the not-so-pretty consequences!
And as things start to spiral, MXTX hits us with pubescent Hua Cheng, Lang Ying/Xie Lian parallels, oh, and no big deal, but BAI WUXIANG IS HERE. This was a top night for reading, notes, and discussing these insane chapters...and we're barely into Volume THREE. Oh no.

Hahahaha, right?! BWX is soooo creepy! The illustration really captures the "mood" of him! And OOOHHH, I hadn't thought about that with the "hanging corpses" connected to QR and how he was bleeding and hanging from the Yong'ans and BWX but that is a BRILLIANT theory! I love it! :D And I agree -- QR is just a fascinating character, isn't he? Thank you for the kind words and comment and I'm excited - albeit nervous - to dive into next week's chapters too!

I'm so glad you were surprised by them turning up even though you've lowkey been expecting them to. that dawning sense of realisation you had...chef's kiss! that illustration is so excellent, the artist did a wonderfully creepy job. man, reading this again I realised how interesting it is that Qi Rong was hung upside down in a tree when being kidnapped. I know that his habit in the present is more of a way to imitate the blood rain thing, and maybe it's a common sort of punishment/torture? But a probably significantly traumatic moment in his life becoming his favourite activity is...wow yeah. I have no idea why I have so much insight into Qi Rong,,,,I don't love or hate him, but he is quite fascinating, I suppose. arghh i love your analysis as per usual and will be waiting impatiently for next episode...but I'm probably getting my copy of volume 5 tomorrow so yay!!

The Guoshi's words really hit hard in these chapters. But hey, we at least have pubescent Hua Cheng, right?! That's a great point about XL not recognizing HC if he can't even recognize a potential consort-to-be. It doesn't help that his memory isn't the greatest, either, eh? And BWX...what a scary presence?! Eh? I think what makes him scariest is yeah, he looks like the kind to casually ask you for tea rather than storm a gate to start a fight, and that's practically creepier....excited but NERVOUS for what's to come! I did not get nearly as much out of it, as I did with your notes. Honestly even knowing what happens next, I'm more interested in your theories because they are so reasonable. Your nitpicking made me really love this story, even-thought I was not impressed with it originally, so thank you so much.

XL cannot stand the situation anymore, so he waved goodbye to his sky daddy, descended, and got into a shouting match with his real daddy at once……although he's strong with fighting, he really has little knowledge about how the society and the relationship of people works. Guoshi has noticed this, but before he could begin teaching this lesson it all went down. Again, FX and MQ show different attitudes regarding XL's decision. FX is going all "whatever you say since I'm your good buddy and subordinate" while MQ clearly regards this being another crisis to be dealt with. But since they're XL's left- and right-hand man, MQ cannot just shout "I quit" and goes to the HR for the last paycheck. A slightly grown-up HC is here! Puberty hits him hard LOL, and since XL can't even remember that girl who's nearly his consort-to-be, I doubt he can connect this young soldier with Hong. 800 years later XL was wondering in QR's den and asking HC "did we meet elsewhere? I must've remembered someone this remarkable like you". But clearly his memory is not that reliable. Still, it's not that easy to connect the almighty ghost king with a wounded human boy or a bandaged-up young soldier. BWX, omg BWX. He's like some evil mastermind watching from above as the hero struggles in his trap, and if not only for that mask, I bet he'd be sipping some nice tea and maybe even inviting XL to join in and have a cookie with human face disease topping together. No wonder it needs the heavenly emperor himself to finish him up.
