Slam Dunk: Chapters 198 - 206 Reaction!

NEW REACTION LINK: https://pixeldrain.com/u/4GuN6xG9

So, I was curious if Hikoichi's chapter where he visited Toyotama would come into play, and OH MY HOW IT HAS! Not only does he prove his worth as Ryonan's #1 Shohoku fan, but we get to see Toyotama in action, and they are CRAZY!

This volume was wild -- Maki talking smack, preview of the ominous Sannoh, and Toyotama proves to be an opponent unlike anything our boys have seen yet! This is going to be good!

Thank you for reading along with me and for the support!

I was dreading that und that would be so unfortunate :( Still very much excited to finally relieve everything available right now again and get nostalgia for things I read literally hours ago lol

Oh my GOSH! I did not even NOTICE the scar! @.@ I will have to go back and view that, now, thank you for pointing that out! Minami has been QUITE the addition to this cast of characters, hasn’t he? I really like that at this point in the series, we have – like you said – started to follow these characters into what they are going to do after high school. It’s good to see that everyone is thinking about the future and what all will come with it. To be honest, Toyotama threw me completely by surprise this volume! It is DEFINITELY a team unlike anything we’ve seen in this show before and wow, you really laid out how Osaka functions as a source of stereotypes there in Japan. I’ve heard of Kansai Ben as a dialect, but that is amazing about over 150 different ones! Similar to Japan having the “Kanto” dialect as mainstream, in the U.S., it’s recommended that those in the news have what’s called a “non-regional dialect” – it sounds like a similar concept. I am LOVING this arc already, too! But yes, NOT a fan of Toyotama! And WOW, thank you for the explanation of Sannou! So much is explained in how they look uniform, the haircut, and the strict rules! That makes a lot of sense! Thank you for explaining all of that! :D I can’t wait to see how this arc shakes out!

No, go off on a tangent! Hahaha! This volume seriously is starting the payoff of this series for me! Our red-headed delinquent has grown so much over the course of these 23 volumes and hundred or so chapters, and this volume shows that while he still has a ways to go, he IS noticing! The moment he wanted to re-watch the tapes of himself? I was stunned and so moved! ^^ I have grown to love this series, and this volume showed it still has PLENTY of surprises for me! I can't wait to see where this goes and how many more surprises are to come! :) Thank you so much for this comment!!

Bit surprised you didn’t comment on Fujima's scar on his head)) So. What do we have here. Chinese scans, that's what we have, so translation is a bit more inconsistent than usual, but still you get the gist of it. Last volume we had "suddenly life" realism. With even Anzai having regrets and really opening up the world. Highschool ain't the end of anything, it's just a beginning. Talented kids in highschool don't automatically make it to the top after graduation. Things can really go south. I like this futuristic approach, so to speak. Akagi getting scouted, Rukawa gaining concrete goal, Sakuragi doing proper high level training. Everyone is moving towards the future with their own agenda. In this volume we go outside of Kanagawa prefecture and get to see that a team can be very different from what we've seen. Different kind of realism. Not every team respects and listens to their coaches by default. Not every team is happy go lucky and friendly. Especially if they're from Osaka)) Yes, I am very much biased against Osaka in general. Those uncultured ghetto swines irritate me to no end)) Urgh, I hate that prefecture and people living there))) Why? Because I'm from Kobe, town about 30km to the west of Osaka, part of same Kansai region (different prefecture). To think that outsiders confuse us with that lot? With those barbaric, money grabbing, pushy brutes? Unforgivable)) The thing is, though you can7t see it in translation, Japan has like 150 dialects and like 10 groups of major dialects. One of them is the Kansai dialect. Japanese that you hear in anime and on tv, the Japanese you learn in school is Kanto dialect. Official, "standard" as we call it, Japanese language is the one used in Kanto region. That's Tokyo, Kanagawa, Chiba, Saitama prefectures. Makes sense. Capital is Tokyo, so the official language is one used there. Kansai dialect is used in prefectures like Osaka, Hyougo, Kyoto, Nara, Mie, Wakayama. The west-central part of Japan. 500~800 km from Tokyo. It's quite different. And it's not the same across the region. Even within same prefecture people speak slightly differently. Of course, Tokyo dwellers know nothing about the differences and the moment they hear a Kansai dialect, they assume the person is from Osaka. Because that's like the flagman, most known prefecture. Comedians use that dialect. Rough guys like yakuza and other mafioso tend to use the Kansai dialect. Media established a certain image of it. It sounds very rough to the ears of people who only know standard Japanese. Thus we, residents of Kobe, a beautiful port town which was the first to open to foreign trade 150 years ago, the town where many foreigners lived and shared their knowledge, the town where people have actual sense of fashion, we get confused with those descendants of lowly merchants who value own merit above anything else by literally everyone not from Kansai region. Drives me nuts))) What you saw in this volume was stereotypical Osaka. Ghetto thugs on and outside of the court. Rough. No respect. Extra rude. Always looking for fights. Typical Osaka. Much development incoming though. Even those dumb monkeys are still kids at the end of the day. Speaking of development, yes, finally. Sakuragi now finally understands why everyone praise Rukawa. After doing 20k shots himself, he can finally see the real difference in skills. Anyway. Enough Toyotama (I actually like this arc, though I hate Osaka), let me explain what's up with Sannou. As you noticed, Sakuragi keeps calling them a different name. That's simply because he's so academically dumb, he can't even read the first grade of elementary school kanji properly when they're part of a name))) It's a tech school. Kougyou means industry. Such schools prepare blue collar workers. Engineers, operators of machinery, etc. They most definitely do not go to universities. Which means... you can expect "less brains, more brawn" type of students. That lead to tech schools having much stricter rules for their students, almost military level. Like not permitting hair to be longer than 1cm. That's why they look more or less the same. The school tries very hard to mold everyone to fit same standards. Utilitaristic uniforms, same haircuts, strict rules, that's a tech school for you. PS: I can't resist, let me give an example of differences in dialects. Let's take phrase "Didn't (I) tell (you)?" and see how it sounds. Standard Japanese (Kanto dialect): Itta desho? Kansai dialect, Osaka variation: Yuuteru yaro? Kansai dialect, Kobe variation: Yuutoh yaro? Slight difference to outsiders, huge difference for us))

This is the reason, why I love Slam Dunk, character development. As a amateur in basketball myself, I am all about potential and growth, so it really hits home to see Sakuragi starting to care and wanting to be good. The scene where he sees Rukawas shot and Inoue showing all the little things why Rukawa's shot was beautiful, the way he ran up to the ball, plant his feet, catch the ball, strength from the legs to the core, then lift, then thows the ball at peak form and Anzai coaching Sakuragi saying all these little things Rukawa did to get his shot off, these are what you must learn to become even as half as good as Rukawa. People don't see the work behind the flash and its gratifying to see Sakuragi finally realizing it, those 20k shots you put up was nothing compare to the greats. Sorry went off a tangent there but this is my favorite moment in Slam Dunk. Sakuragi who played ball to impress Haruko, is finally learning to appreciate the game and loving it.
