There's SO MUCH happening with Reki, Langa, Adam, Joe, Cherry; Tadashi...UGH. The beach episode was such a front and the palm tree betrayal is REAL, y'all.
A lot to talk about with this episode, but...can we just go back to the happy, wholesome, Renga friendship moments? Please? PLEASE?!

YES! It's pain that has built up through the episodes and there's been all this fun and happy atmosphere to distract, but no longer...and Reki's fear was PALPABLE in this episode. I like that our "sunshine" character archetype is flipped on its head here and his fear is warranted...ugh, YES, this show is so damn good, indeed! YES! I'm glad you said that! I hated that Shadow and Miya teased Reki -- they didn't realize the impact it had, but we as the audience did and it was rough to watch! :( Ahhhh...and yeah, sure...I'm sure by next episode it'll all be back to normal! **nervous laugh**

2021-04-26 04:50:20 +0000 UTCThis episode was true pain. The angst has been mounting for quite some time and, yeah, it feels really earned. It's even harder to stomach /because/ Reki is such a selfless ball of sunshine. It broke my heart the look on his face when he says "I'm scared." Like, yeah, he's scared! And for a lot of reasons. He's scared of Adam hurting Langa like his friend got hurt (or worse), scared of Adam becoming Langa's new focus because of how good of a skater he is... generally just scared of losing Langa in some way, shape, or form. This show is so damn good. I'm still upset at the teasing that Shadow and (to a lesser extent) Miya were doing to Reki. Pair that with his own inner monologue and those jerks he overheard and it all finally reached a boiling point. Oh, well, I'm sure this problem will resolve itself in one quick episode and all will be well again soon. For sure.

2021-04-26 03:10:24 +0000 UTCRIGHT?! A happy beach episode and then "pain in the rain!" Reki is SUCH a good MC, and I've really come to like him, too. He's so darn relatable and I can see a lot of my own struggles with him, which makes it hard because you want to tell him how to get out of his funk...and Langa seems to want to help, but can't communicate it, exactly. Yes, Reki is selfless, so he doesn't want to burden anyone, so he hides it all away, but that's not healthy...ahhhhhhhhh.... I do think there's a little jealousy there with Adam, but like you said, I think it's mainly that Adam is dangerous and he's already lost one friend to leaving skating because of an injury -- he doesn't want to lose two. And yeah, Adam clearly left our poor boy traumatized. :( :( I just want happy, fun SK8 back, please!

2021-04-21 21:11:35 +0000 UTCThis episode making me eat my words, eh? ^^ Ahhh, all aboard the pain train! There was SO MUCH happening in this episode! Reki's struggle is so relatable, but I just want him to realize he has so much going for him, too! Even if he isn't flashy!! I SO see the Haruki parallels with Reki -- Reki is as important to the group as Haruki was for Given -- and it's like Langa wants him to know that, he's just not outwardly communicating it, yet. UGH. And Adam's aunts are the WORST. If anyone is like, "Why is Adam like this?!" I'm going to point to my giant PowerPoint of just them and his father in every slide, haha! And yesssss, the episode showed more and more muted color and darkness...this show does a great job of using color, lighting, and sound to help fully cement the atmosphere, for better or worse. And...uhm...High School Adam/Joe/Cherry -- Now THAT is a prequel series I would want to see! Cherry as a punk with piercings, Adam looking preppy/emo, Joe as a prepped jock and NOT beefy yet....I need more backstory on these three!

I did NOT put two and two together with Banana Fish and Yuri on Ice, but you are SO right! :3 I now know why Twitter was just sad emojis for weeks... And those damn palm trees! Right in the gut, that knife! ^^ I also picked the most apt night to watch that episode, because you could hear the rain and thunder...definitely added to the ambiance! I'm also 100% with you -- I don't HATE Adam, especially knowing now about his aunt's, but man, he IS damaged...and I just want to stay away from Langa. His concept of love is clearly a...bit...warped. Yeah, they could all be buddies, just with at least 6 feet social distancing between Langa and Aadam at all times. ;)

2021-04-21 21:03:55 +0000 UTCI am glad you enjoyed the beach episode because now it’s time to suffer 💔😭😭 Reki’s my favorite in the show which surprised me because MC aren’t usually my thing. It destroyed me that he’s consistently there for everyone in this show, especially Miya & Langa, and they don’t realize how much he’s struggling. Which makes sense bc Reki is so selfless that he doesn’t want to impose his troubles on his friends. And Miya and Langa are so young and oblivious, respectively, and of course they miss it until Reki explodes and it just hurts that he doesn’t have a version of himself to realize what he’s going through before he lets it destroy him. 💔💔😭 As for Reki not wanting Langa to skate with Adam, I think it’s not because he doesn’t like Adam but because he is scared that Adam will hurt him. Reki’s terrified of Adam. Before their race, Reki was always willing to skate with better skaters for fun or honor or whatever, but Adam somehow shook his confidence, took his passion and reduced him to who he is now and he’s probably terrified that Adam will do the same to Langa. Plus, besides his psyche, Adam injured him physically too.

It's hard to be around someone who excels at the same thing you love to do. As humans we tend to compare ourselves to others, even if we should not. Reki has many good qualities they're just not FLASHY like Langa. Reki is an inventor, he understands skating deeply and he is a good teacher, but these skills are not what people see. We see some Given parallels with Haruki, who felt he did not belong on the band anymore because there now two prodigies (Uenoyama & Mafuyu) in the band and then there is Kaji who can do multiple things well (Violin, drums, etc.). Feeling out of balance, having your "sound" be out of tune. Adam's aunts are just so toxic. Did you notice how the color palette seemed to become muted, less vibrant as the episode progressed? Oh, yes High School Adam, Joe & Cherry. Hmmm. Cherry with piercings. Hmmm.

Episode 7 is notoriously painful EX: Yuri on Ice episode 7/ Banana Fish episode 7. MWHAHAHAHAHA it feels so good to hurt with you. They really said have your DOKI DOKI cutesy beach episode before we drive this skateboard shaped knife into your heart and don't forget those palm trees!!! OWO LET'S KEEP THE FEELING~~~ Also can we talk about your weather? MOTHER NATURE KNEW WHAT WAS UP LMAO! And despite everything he's done I don't hate Adam. I hate what his three aunts made him become with their abusive love. In fact his whole family sucks ass his father wouldn't even let him have a hobby. The only good thing he has in his life is Tadashi and he's so emotionally damaged he can't even see that. That being said he needs to stop creeping on Langa. I'd be content if they were all sk8 buddies (with a restraining order on Adam of course. Just in case...)
