Free! Dive to the Future: Episode 6 FULL LENGTH Reaction!

Sooooooo....Ikuya and Hiyori have a much more complicated past than I initially thought. And while we get some understanding behind Hiyori's thoughts and past...my dude, your actions are not exactly "helping" Ikuya.

Hmmm...Ikuya obviously needs a wider support net, and Natsuya getting closer and closer to the eye of the storm may hopefully help! In any case, this episode sets up some interesting developments as we enter the second half of the season!

That's a REALLY good observation of how Hiyori and Haru are similar; I didn't consider that -- Haru's parents haven't been in the picture much either, but I feel that because of Mako and the others supporting him, he's been in a much better place, whereas Hiyori LITERALLY only has had Ikuya to attach to. Hmmm...And YES, *cough*Natsuya*cough* indeed! Yes, between all of that and Ikuya not totally "seeing" him, he's a bit messed up. It doesn't excuse him, but I at least GET why he's doing that..now...what do the characters do about it? Hm...OH! And that's cool that we're able to tell where in the U.S. they are! San Francisco makes sense! :) Thank you for the comment!

Oh, Melanie, you are PREACHING TO THE CHOIR about Natsuya! I was reading your comment and smiling the BIGGEST smile, because I've already recorded my reaction to Episode 7 and....let's just say I'm going to address pretty much the same thing about Natsuya that you bring up here! ^^ I can't wait for you to hear it! That "Shocked Pikachu" meme conversation is HILARIOUS and SO TRUE! And Haru can't argue with a kid, eh? :P I love it! Asahi is really such a good friend; I LOVE that he came in clutch to support Haru after Hiyori's hurtful comment and it's clear that he is NOT having any of the unfounded angst! I just love him in this season! I can't wait for next weeeeeeeek either! <3 <3 <3 Thank you for the comment!!

Thank you for the comment! :D Yessss, Hiyori has abandonment issues, and I get that he's trying to help Ikuya, but yeah, he's going about it the wrong way and it's not helping, but making things worse. :/ That's a great point about Rin's conversation to Sousuke -- it REALLY makes me want to see Rin and Ikuya meet and talk, because if anyone would be the voice for understanding what Ikuya's going through, it's probably Rin. Funny that he's already met Natsuya...now he just needs to meet the brother! ;) And yes, of COURSE these two coaches have the most RinHaru rivalry, too; I really want to see them meet! And ahhh, Nao/Natsuya is just goooood...I appreciate all the parallels with our swim boys; like you said, no one is a "copy" of another. There's similarities, but oh, so many differences! I hope you have a wonderful day, too! ^^

Like you said, I also totally get why some people hate Hiyori, but you can’t say that isn’t a fascinating character. As for a lot of Free, it’s about the trauma. Completely understandably, Hiyori has abandonment issues. His parents left him alone, and he was forced to fend for himself, which is not a good combination for his shy personality. Adults love “quiet, mature” kids because they don’t cause a lot of problems, but a lot of times these kids are like this because they’re forced to grow up very quickly due to their parents. He kind of had a similar upbringing to Haru’s, but Haru always had Mako and his other friends around when he was on his own. So abandonment issues, a desire to please older people to be considered reliable *cough*Natsuya*cough*, Ikuya not realizing that 1) they had met in Iwatobi, and 2) that he saved him from drowning in the States, Haru coming back into the picture and threatening his relationship with Ikuya, and yeah, dude is a mess. That of course does not excuse the way he lashes out and hovers over Ikuya. He’s hurt and acts out of fear over losing the one person that ever reached out to him and gave him a chance. In another note, fun fact about the episode, there’s a shot of the sign at Fisherman’s Wharf when the flashback begins, which means that Ikuya, Natsuya, and Hiyori were studying in San Francisco.

Something that we haven’t talked much about is how much Natsuya’s absence must also be affecting Ikuya, in some ways even more than Haru’s broken promise. Ikuya’s “thing” has always being the fear of being alone and abandoned. When we were introduced to him in the movie, Ikuya didn’t even want to join the club at first because he didn’t want to connect with others due to his brother’s “abandonment”. His answer to being rejected has always been to close up and distance himself from everybody in order to prevent being hurt. With the help of Haru, Makoto and Asahi, Ikuya learns to connect again back in middle school and even fixes his relationship with his brother. But then, his friends abandoned him again, so he decides to distance himself by going to America. And THEN, in America, Natsuya leaves him behind for Hiyori to take care of. We saw in this episode that at the beginning of his stay in America, Ikuya was mostly fine! He smiled and befriended Hiyori and was swimming well. Which leads me to believe that Natsuya leaving was what eventually overwhelmed him. Natsuya has been kind of an a*hole. He is putting all his big brother responsibilities on Hiyori who suddenly finds himself trying to be both, Ikuya’s brother/parent and friend. And, of course, that will just end up messing up with their relationship bc Ikuya does not need him to be his parent, but his friend. You add to that the fact that Hiyori seems incapable of putting Ikuya’s interests and desires before his own and you end up with one very fudged up relationship. One thing I found funny and totally in line with Asahi’s character was how he immediately says that Hiyori’s claim that everybody Haru swims with suffers are false and uses himself as an example. This proves how loyal he is because, technically, it’s not true. In the movie, he was suffering for most of it bc he forgot the “free style” after watching Haru swim it. He could have blamed Haru for this “suffering”. BUT, obviously, Asahi is way to loyal to blame Haru for that. He’s beyond the angst fest Rin and Ikuya would have made 😂😂 Also, Past seasons: Haru: “I only swim free” Everybody: “Hahaha, that’s so Haru” This season Haru: “I only swim free” Ryuji: “Why?” Haru: *shock Pikachu face” 😂😂 Next episode is SO good! Can’t wait to watch your reaction!!! 💞💞💞

This was the episode I started to understand Hiyoris actions a lot more. Which doesn't justify that he does things that aren't good at all. Since Hiyori was all alone when he was little it makes sense that, now that he finally found a friend, he's afraid of losing him and ending up alone again. And he clearly wants the best for Ikuya but the way he does it is really bad. Hiyori thinks he knows what Ikuya wants and I'm sure Ikuya wants to compete at an global level but not only. That reminds me of season two episode 4 when Rin said to Sousuke that he wants to achive his dream but also wants to swim with his friends because they give him the strenght. It is sad that because Ikuya was so focused on Haru that he never realized that Hiyori saved him too. What I think, why Hiyori can't see that even if he tries harder it won't solve the problem, is because he never had anyone to rely on so he just can't see that it's better for Ikuya to talk it out with the others. Just a moment to appreciate everything about Nao. Right, let Nao and Natsuya travel the world together. XD I probably said it already in the past but I like it a lot that some of the free characters are similar but they're also different. None of them are just copies. We got some pretty extra coaches there and of course they have a RinHaru dynamic. XD I wish you a wonderful day!!
