It's two stories in an episode, but this one is SO good! I love the development we get with Yasano and Rampo as they face this STRANGE character based off of Edgar Allen Poe!
But y'all, the second part? I've waited all season for these two characters to finally reunite, and it looks like I'm about to get my wish! And it's all aboard a giant mechanical whale with a mass-murdering tycoon and kimono clad girl! What else could lead us up to the season finale?!

I loooooved the relationship established between Rampo and Yasano this episode! It was so cute!! And yes, that symbolism between Poe and Rampo -- so telling! I love when shows do that, too! The same was earlier this season with Natsume and Oda. And that makes sense -- Dazai wanting to just "scuff" up Ango enough to need ADA's help...but you can tell he's still very bitter towards Ango about his role in Oda's death. :( Thanks for the comment and have a great day, too!

2021-08-09 11:35:26 +0000 UTCPoe is definitely one of my favourite characters. The simbolic in the flashback. Rampo in the light and Poe in the dark. I love when shows do that. This was the episode when I started shipping Yosano and Rampo. They're so cute together. I think Dazai was just trying to hurt him so he will have to go to Yosano and have to do them a favour. It's unlikely but what if there was another way to do that and he just wanted to hurt him because he hates him for what happened in the past? This thought shatters my heart. It hurts to see that Dazai wants him to suffer even though I'm sure Ango still does. Wish you a wonderful day!!

I hadn't had much interest in his character up until this episode, but the sincerity in wanting the president to have been "honest" with him, and him actually admitting that he's partially (at least) self-aware that he's not truly gifted, but doesn't want that perception changing, and Yasano's acknowledgement and sincerity? It made my heart melt! :3 I loved it! And it was so chilling, the interactions between Dazai and Ango! Dazai is DEFINITELY still bitter about Ango, and the part in Oda's death...the fact that he possibly schemed all of this up is....definitely disturbing, and definitely Dazai. ^^ And I hadn't made that connection with Akutagawa and Gide/Fitzgerald, but that's SO true! And HA! Oh man, I think I could teach a course on parallels of characters and use this entire show as the main example...and yes, the way the past is influencing the present and how characters interact with one another...sooo good! And I agree, the dark era novel was a perfect transition from season one to season two. I'm reading the manga now, and it will be interesting to see that transition without the light novel and how it's handled.

Interesting...and yes, the connection with Poe and Rampo was wonderful tied into this story as well! ^^ And oooh, I'm liking this angle with Ango vs Dazai as well much more...that makes sense. And WOW, wow, Dazai. Bringing flowers to remind Ango of Oda....yeah, Dazai is clearly still angry at Ango's betrayal and wants him to feel extreme guilt. Dang, that is some heartless scheming, but it's Dazai...so....that checks out!

A total long range schemer with layers...the similarities with him and Mori fascinate me to no end...

2021-08-08 18:28:57 +0000 UTCI love Ranpo so much and this episode just hurt me in all the right ways.He’s just such an interesting character since he is the most intelligent yet least “powerful” of them all. Plus I love how much of an enigma he is. He is brilliant yet useless in everyday life things like taking the train and so arrogant but lacks self confidence at the same time. I love him. As for Ango and Dazai, I think the implication is that Dazai planned the accident just so that Ango would “owe” the DA for healing him and then feel obligated to help them get Kyoka. Dazai is just such a manipulative bastard and I LOVE him. Plus, Dazai is definitively still bitter at Ango’s betrayal and the small part it played in Oda’s death. When I first watched this episode and saw Akutagawa enter the Moby Dick, I almost died! Once again we can draw similarities between the Dark Era arc and this one. In the Dark Era arc, Akutagawa attacked Oda without care of the true enemy, Gide, just because he wanted to proove himself to Dazai. Will he do the same in the present and fight with Atsushi instead of joining him against Fitzgerald? The more I watch this anime, the more I want to write an essay tracing all the parallels between the two arcs because it’s just brilliant how much the past is repeating itself and influencing the decisions the big players (Mori, Dazai, Akutagawa, etc) make in the present. It was such a brilliant idea for the anime to put the dark era light novel arc before continuing with the manga chapters.

2021-08-08 18:26:07 +0000 UTCGoing to Nakahara's home town in time for an event in his memory, I learned much about his interactions with other writers of that epoche. One of the interesting things is that Chuuya met Mori Rintaro only once in his childhood and was so impressed he wanted to change his name to Rintaro as well. Another one of those he admired was Taneda Santoka ;) Poe and Rampo is another example of real life link turned around! As you already know I believe, Edogawa Rampo is a penname made out of Poe's name, and their literary style and themes are quite close. I don't think Dazai was actively trying to kill Ango, he needs that connection. Probably he aimed for severe trauma, enough to get Ango indebted to Yosano and the Agency. Ohh I hadn't paid attention to that flower bouquet before. But now I think I remember, we had once a web-event related to flowers that are associated with characters'/writers' birthdays, and roses+daisies were definitely for someone in Buraiha. So Dazai brings a bouquet to remind Ango of Oda even more cruelly. He definitely needs Ango to feel guilty and cave into his demands.

2021-08-08 18:10:40 +0000 UTCI love Edgar Allen Poe, too, so seeing his character pop up here was wonderful, and my heart just warmed with the friendship of Yasano and Rampo! :3 Ahhhhh, all I can say about the next two episodes is I was fangirling like crazy! And I just finished recording the season finale...and the discussion ALONE was nearly an hour...so...there's THAT. @.@ But YES! After this season ends, I'm going to watch the OVA and then Dead Apple before starting Season 3. So excited!!

Also, Ranpo vs Poe is the perfect match because (I´m sure you already know this haha) Edogawa Ranpo -a pseudonym- is the japanese pronunciation for Edgar (Edoga) Allan (WaRan) Poe (Po) And of course, that ENDING... sooooo ready for your reactions to the last few episodes of the season! And remember to watch the OVA and the movie before starting with season 3 :)
